In the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch yesterday a charge of assaulting Seth Snoswcll, so as to causc'actual bodily harm was preferred against Edith Firth, aged SS, a domestic, who was remanded to September .11 on bail of £SO. and one surety of £SO. Displayed in Court was a garden fork, which the police alleged was the weapon used by accused. Complainant, is now in hospital for treatment. His nose had been broken in the affray. Counsel said ho understood the chargo might be reduced. The police said further inquiries would be made.
On several occasions the pavilion of the Northern Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club has been unlawfully entered, and on Saturday another raid was made on the building with the result that considerable damage va done. In reporting the matter to the City Council last evening, the club sought permission to lock the gates at sundown and erect a trespass notice. The council, in discussing the situation, felt, loath t.o prevent the public from entering the grounds, and thought the solution of the problem was to male the pavilion more burglar-proof. The cngincor was instructed to report on what can be done in this direction.
An airman on board tlie Makura, which reached Wellington yesterday, is the American mail dyer, Pilot K. Leonard, who is on his way back to the United States after a quick combined pleasure and business trip round the world which, when he arrives back in San Francisco, will' have taken approximately just GO days. Questioned about the Melbourne race, Pilot Leonard said he would probably act as a source of information. He 'had some interesting matters to report lo his company when he returned home.
