AMATEUR CONTESTS. On Friday evening the Manawatu Amateur Boxing Association will stage its annual tourney in the Opera House. A representative number of boxers, drawn from Feilding, Marlon, and as far afield as Pahiatua and Masterton. will contest tho eight classes.
The entries so far have been very gratifying and several contestants of formidable reputation arc included among those who will combat the various classes. Exponents of the fistic art, from the diminutive flyweights to the husky heavyweights, will all be keyed up for Friday evening, and there will be doughty competition to decide which of the contestants will make the trip to Hastings on September 19 to represent Manawatu at the New Zealand amateur boxing championships. There is only one price for admission, 2s 6d (no tax), admitting to all seats. Tho ring has been constructed as in previous contests, on the stage, and all the seats will be virtually ringside ones. Those stout old "sports" who are wont to bemoan the decline of boxing in general, and especially that in the Manawatu, will be afforded ample proof cn Friday evening that tho Manawatu will not be behind any province in the class of fighters she will send to the tourney.
The first bout starts at 7.43 sharp and every bout promises to bo chockful of interest, verve and clever boxing.
