Land Drainage

MEETING OF MANAWATU BOARD. The Manawatu Laud Drainage Board met in Palmerston North yesterday. Present: Trustees P. G. Mildon (chairman), W. E. Thomas, A. TV. Hamlin, J. Coll ip, D. Prouso and F. J. Russell. The overseer (Mr. M. Watson) reported on the various works carried out during the past month as follows: Drains cleaned: Davidson’s, SmallV, Kawau Stream, Mitchell's (Longhorn), Factory drain (Newbury), Jamieson's, Johansen's, Carter's, Cameron’s line (top portion). The small request of the Newbury Dairy Company for a new drain had also been attended to. Work on the Maugaone banks had been completed to Botanical road on both sides. Owing to the unsettled state of tho weather during the past month, this work has been somewhat retarded. Work on section A of the Hamilton's bond scheme was commenced about tho middle of the month and considering tho nature of (ho weather, fair progress has been made. Approximately 20 chains of bank have been completed. Trucks and mils are on the job and some arc in use already. At present there is an average of 34G No, 5 scheme men carrying out this work. The (Klerk (Mr. N. J. Nielsen) reported that he had supplied to iho Unemployment Board a return of developmental and productive work carried out by the board with relief labour between July .1, 1933, and .Tune 20, 1934- This included a deviation of Gin Kawau stream, (length S chains, 1-Sft. wide on. top. ,12ft. wide on bottom, sft. average depth); stopbanking Mangaone stream (2 miles on. both sides): joint outlet improvements (half-mile); Burke's drain (3 miles). The Palmerston North Town Clerk advised that the City Council would put in hand at an early date, improvements necessary to the level of Boundary road at the bridge. The clerk reported an overdraft of £992 19s with £3Bl 3s Pd to bo refunded for No. 5 scheme wages. Reporting on unpaid rales, the dork tabled a statement showing £125 2s owing for 1032-34, £2O 2s 3d for .1922-32 and £43 0s Id for 1932-33, a total of £194 11s 4d. They considered each case of overdue rates individually, and finally came to the derision not to waive the 10 percent. penalty and to sue for amounts overdue. Tho following rates were struck for the 1934-35 financial year:—Class A, 21-40th of a penny in the £ to produce £197 7s 4d; class B, 03-200th of a. penny in the £ to produce £SO2 14s 0.1; class C, 21-lOOth of a. penny in the £ (n produce £SO2 0s 2d; total, £IBO2. These, rates are on. the new valuation, last year's figures being as follows: —Glass A, 21-50f.b of a penny in the £, producing £lsl 17s sd; class R, .120-5001 h of a penny, producing £BO7 0s 10d: nnd class G, S4-500th of a. penny, producing

£857 2s id; total, £lBlO 0s 7d. Mrs. M. E. Manderson (Boundary rnrul) wrote stating that she would not allow any of the board’s empolyees to go on to her property to undertake Mopbanking work.—To bo informed that the board has power under the Ar-t to enter on the land and that the work must, be done.
