Manawatu Hockey Representatives Beaten
AUCKLAND’S EASY WIN. AUCKLAND, Sept. 1. Freed from the disadvantages of the mud and slush, the Auckland representatives in the final Challenge Shield match of the season completely overwhelmed Manawatu, the ciiallongers, m all departments of the game, and goalhunted so frequently that the visitors’ vacillating defence was subjected to such severe battery that their citadel was often overcome, and to fhoir amazement Auckland won by seven goals to nil. Owing to the numerous breakdowns caused by the ball bumping so disconcertingly, there was little of quality in the general run of play of tho shield hunters. The visitors’ play was well below shield standard. Tho teams were: — Manawatu (green and white). —Goal, L. Hart; full-backs, K. Drinkwatcr, W. Sutton; half-backs, J. Eckcrslcy, N. Hanson, M. Byers; forwards, D. O’Brien, W. Lundy, R. Hoarc, L. Monteith, V. Turner. Reserve: R. Findlay. Auckland (blue and white). —Goal, M. Wattam; full-backs, E. Dunning, F. Clark; half-backs, H. Jones, S. Robertson, V. S. Pickens; forwards, F. Chapman, C. Floyd, E. Watts, C. Watts, F. Wellbourne. Reserves: C. Smith, T: Clark, R. Philpolts, M. Vipond. Umpires: Messrs. 11. E. Watts and F. McLachlan. Manawatu defended the eastern goal and E. Watts started an attack. Wellbourne missed badly. From the roll-in Floyd reached tl:o circle and Hart saved cleverly. A miss by Dunning and Clark repeating the trick gave Montcitli an opening. lie reached the circle, but Robertson got back and saved. Play again shifted to Manawatu’s quarter, a twenty-five bully resulting. The Watts brothers forced tho pace and invaded the circle, but tho visitors got out of the situation luckily. Working down the left Hoaro sent to Monteith, but his progress was blocked by Dunning, who returned to his forwards, and in a tight corner Manawatu conceded a penalty corner that was blocked. Again Auckland’s forwards swarmed tho circle, and after seven minutes’ play E. Watts scored. The Auckland forwards were quick on the attack and Floyd found tho net. Manawatu made a rally from the bully, reaching Auckland’s circle, but the effort was short-lived, and the visitors were soon back to defonsivo tactics. Sutton hit to Hoare, who headed an attack. Turner returned his pass, but Clark intercepted, sending on to Floyd, who led a nice attack. Drinkwater stopped progress and play returned to midfield. Tho visitors worked down the left, and from a freo hit Hoare shot. Wattam mado a feeble clearance, but Clark camo back and cleared. The visiting vanguard were soon back to the circle, Turner finishing by sending tlie ball over tho line. Upfield swept the Auckland forwards, Chapman swung in a great centre, and E. Watts shot. Hart mado a splendid save and Auckland gained a corner. C. Watts rocked in a hard shot that hit the post. Manawatu saved with a corner, but a few minutes later smart work by C. Watts and Floyd ended in the latter hoisting Auckland’s third goal.
The Auckland forwards again attacked, and Hart saved cleverly, conceding a penalty corner that C. IV atts goaled from. O’Brien raised Manawatu’s hopes with a run down the right. Tho ball came into the circle and H. Jones saved, conceding a penalty corner. Thu circle was cleared, and play returned t* midfield. Chapman sent in a centre to E. Watts, but he overran on the circle edge and Drinkwater cleared. An accident to F. Clark held up play for some minutes, and ho was replaced by C. Smith. Upon resuming, Manawatu attacked, a twenty-five resulting. The Auckland vanguard was soon on tho attack,'and C. Floyd missed the not. A cross-hit by Turner, was taken by O’Brien, who centred, and IVattam cleared with the boot. Another penalty corner to Manawatu was saved by Wattam, and Dunning cleared. Halftime sounded. Auckland 4, Manawatu 0.
Auckland dashed away upon resuming but Lundy cleared to the sideline and from tho roil in O’Brien centred. Monteith made a dash todconnect, but the ball crossed tho line. Sutton intercepted an Auckland pass and hit to Iloare, who beat the defence until Dunning came across and cleared. 11a,, lmng in midfield until Chapman got away, and passed to C. Watts, whose pass was stopped by Drinkwater. J local vanguard continued to attack from the right and Manawatu wero relieved with free hits. The local side still pressed and C. Watts wont through, the goalie conceding a penalty corner. The danger was cleared and Manawatu worked up the left. A cross hit was taken by Turner and tho situation looked dangerous, until .Tones came back and cleared. The Auckland forwards again broke through and C. Watts, securing on tho circle edge, beat the goalie after 13 minutes’ play. An accident compelled Drinkwater to retire, ho being replaced by Findlay. The visitors again became aggressive, headed by Turner. The local defence held and Dunning sent to Jones, to Chapman, and another siege was set on the visitors' goal. Good stopping by Sutton saved the situation. A series of long hits cased Manawatu and play shifted to Auckland’s twenty-five. A nice piece of passing by the Watts brothers and Wellbourno shifted the scene to tho visitors’ circle, but the bumpy ground beat the players and the ball rolled over the line/ Auckland continued to attack and a penalty corner failed to improvo matters. A breakaway by Turner looked hopeful, but lie hit too hard and the ball crossed tho line. Auckland set up another lengthy attack, relief eventually coming to tho visitors with a free hit. Auckland, led by Wellbourno, attacked, and Floyd, securing, netted.
From tko bully Watts and Floyd went through and E. Watts netted. Time was called: Auckland 7, Manawatu 0.
