Davis Cup Doubles to America

BRITISH PAIR WIN ONE SET LONDON, July 30. At Wimbledon in the doubles match in. the challenge round for the Davi* Cup G. Lott and L. Stoefen (U.S.A.) defeated H. Lee and G. P. Hughes (Britain), 7 —5, 6 —0,--6,f —6, 9 7 Britain won both 'the opening singles and still leads by two matches to one. The first set of the doubles rather disproved the assumption 'that the inclusion of Lee in order to give Perry a rest made the doubles a “gift” to the Americans. After a shaky start with the weakest lobbing the British pair found that Stoefen lacked control of his drives and smashes and concentrated on him. Lott, however, took control and broke through service to win the set in the twelfth game. Stoefen’s unsteadiness abated and the Americans simply massacred their opponents in the second set, notwithstanding Lee’s brilliance in half-volley-ing and standing up to Stoefen ! s severest thrusts.

Hughes was in great form in the third set when Stoefen again was faulty. The raggedness of the Americans persisted in the fourth set, in which the Britons rose to great heights, but Lott proved a sheet-anchor, Stoefen occasionally producing an unplayable shot to help to win a hard-fought match. Open Tournaments Not Yet Received Tuesday, 5.45 p.m. LONDON, July 31. A meeting of the International Lawn Tennis Federation decided against the institution of open tournaments in which amateurs would compete with professionals."
