Silver Ring and Royal Amphora, who were shipped to Sydney last week, arc in the best of health. Silver Ring has done some sprinting at Riccarton and has shown that ho will not require | much more galloping to bring hint to his best, so that he should bo ready to show form early on tlic trip. This will bo his second visit to Australia, but he is likely to demonstrate that he is a much better horses than when he raced there in tho spring of his three-y r ear-old season. Royal Amphora, having been raced through the winter, will bo ready to perform as soon as ho arrives. lie is a speedy splinter, who will attract attention, even if he is not up to tho best compauy. Polydora is again in active work at Riccarton. She has done no racing since last spring, her retirement coming on tho eve of the New Zealand Cup, for which she was favourite at I the time she dropped out. Sho has done a lot of useful exercise, aud, though sho will not be at her best next month, sho only needs to train on to be a popular candidate for important, events in the spring. Mr W. T. Hazlett, tho president of the Southland Racing Club, lias spent a good deal of time in Australia dur-
iug the past year, and lie has had opportunities for summing up betting systems. Speaking at tho annual meeting of his dub last week, he expressed the opinion that the time was ripe for the 5s totalisator to be tried, but it was a matter for tho committee.
The trouble which overtook Pai’antua when racing at Trentham this month appears to have been serious. Her withdrawal from her Australian engagements is followed by the report that she. is to be retired to tho stud. Nightmarch being named as her mate. As Nightmarch won tho Melbourne and New Zealand Cups and Palantua won the New Zealand Cup, while both of them aro bred on great staying lines, the result of their mating should proluce a great inheritance of stamina.
