Citrus Firsts Wanted From Australia
EFauRTC TO SECURE LIFTING OP EMBARGO Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Lust Night. Cabled advice regarding the possibility of shipments of citrus fruits being sent from Australia was expected today by Mr. F. Bray, the Southland representative on the New Zealand Fruit and Produce Auctioneers’ and Importers’ Federation, who has communicated with allied interests in Melbourne on the subject. As he has not yet received any reply, it is assumed t.nat the position remains in the abeyance. “It is essential to this part of the Dominion that the embargo on Australian oranges should be lifted.” Air. Bray said. “Shipments from Australia would come from Melbourne to the Bluff direct, effecting a considerable saving in costs, which naturally would react*l:o the benefit of the public. In fact, the South Island is being unduly penalised, because the North Island has regular direct shipment:; from California and the Islands.
“There seems to be an apathy on the part of the public in the Noitn Island towards the effect of tnc embargo on this trade down here. A deputation representing medical, shipping and business sections of the community, as well as members of the trade and' of public bodies, will wait on the Mavor to-norow morning to endeavour to secure his active co-opera-tion in the lifting of the embargo.
