WANGANUI BEATEN IN TRIAL GAME In the presence of a large crowd of enthusiasts tho trial representative. Rugby fixture ' between Wanganui and iiangitikei-Taihape, was played on Marton Park yesterday and resulted in a win for tho combined team by 30 points to 10. Tho teams were:Combined (green): Bradley, Down, McPhec, Chase, Lambert, Follas, Pritchard, Murphy, M. Taiuru, Graham, McLennan, Walker, Gablinsky, Ivilkolly and Bridge. Reserves: Backs, D. Thompson, H. Pritchard. Wanganui: Upston, Wilson, Morgan, Darby, F. Thomson, Norbey, Iloskin, Lockett, Byres, Buckley, McGregor, Hutchinson, Pirama, W. Thompson, Mclntyre. Wanganui were too slow in the backs and were rarely given a chance to ox»erate, and it was only in the last five minutes when the combined team eased tip that they showed any dash. The combined team went well in the forwards, and individually the backs played well. Wanganui (blue) kicked off, and the north were immediately beseiged by the forcing tactics of the blue vanguard. Loose passing enabled Follas to intercept, and very soon the greens wero in Wanganui’s territory, Follas and McPhce missing a goldefi opportunity. Wanganui were penalised, but Chase found the wind too strong. Down, the Maori All Black, had two good runs down the side line, and gained much ground. Wilson put Wanganui in a good position, and transferred to Morgan who centred nicely, and fast following up by Buckley saw the blues draw first blood. Morgan converted. — Wanganui 0, Combined 0. The greens were not slow to retaliate, and a long pass enabled Chase to speed hot-foot for the Wanganui line. Upston came across quickly and nailed the Maori winger from tho roar. A forward scramble ensued and W. Thompson snapped in a short pass to go over near the posts. Chase made no mistake with tho kick. —Combined 5, Wanganui 5. The greens were awarded a series of penalties and at length Chase struck the upright. There was a wild scramble for possession, Henry securing and dashing over. Chase again converted. —Combined 10, Wanganui 5. Down made a jiuky side-line run, passing a knot, of blue backs before throwing a lob pass out to Pritchard. Down came in again and dashed over at the corner. Chase failed. —Combined 13, Wanganui 5. Pritchard heeled the ball from a tight scrummage on the Wanganui line and shot it to his club mate Follas, who wormed his way through tho blue inside backs and scored a dazzling try. Clasc missed the uprights. —Combined 16, Wanganui 5. Half time cainc without any further score.

On the change-over Stephenson replaced Chase on tho wing, and D. Thompson replaced Bradley at full back. Wanganui were . hooking the ball in the scrums, but the inside backs were too slow at. getting away, lollas opened up and passed to Lambert who ran on hard until he was overwhelmed. Follas joined in again and dribbled to the line for Lambert to rush on and touch down. D. Thompson goaled beautifully.—Combined 22, Wanganui 5. At this stage Wanganui were hopelessly outclassed and were unable to penetrate. An exchange of kicks between Norbey and Down saw the latter gather in a high punt and send a risky pass halfway across the field to Steadman. Tho latter raced ahead to the blue line, where AV. Thompson secured and touched down. D. Thompson again converted. —Combined 27, Wanganui 5. 'the blues got going, but McPhec was handy aud intercepting nicely, outpaced the opposition for a grand try at the blue corner. Thompson failed to convert.— Combined 30, Wanganui 5. Wilson, after making a fruitless run into the green 25, had his chance® soon after when D. Thompson failed to find touch in the face of a hot blue forward rush. Wanganui hooked quickly, and Wilson, receiving the final transfer, ran in under the posts. Morgan converted. Combined 30, Wanganui 10. Both sides indulged in spasmodic attacks, blit wild passing frustrated all attempts to score. The blue forwards at length pushed their way up to the combined line, and for a while the greens let up, Wilson running on and scoring. The latter unfortunately knocked the corner flag, and the try was disallowed. Just before time Down sent, in another long pass to midfield, for Lambert, to snap if in and send Bteadman racing to tho corner where he was effectively grassed by Wilson. Time then sounded leaving Combined victorious by 30 —10. Mr. J. Dickson refereed.
