Magistrate's Court

CASES HEARD YESTERDAY Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North. Charge of Theft. Henry Edward Thomas Wukelin, a labourer, aged 21, with no fixed place of abode, was charged that (1) on May 17 at Palmerston North he stole a bicycle valued at £5, the property of Enoch ltonbcrg, and (2) that being a person convicted of theft and sentenced to probation lie failed to comply with the conditions of his release. Accused pleaded guilty oa both counts. Senior-Sergeant Whitehousc stated that the young man had stolen the bicycle from Palmerston North and had taken it 1o Levin where lie had tried to sell it. A constable had arrested accused there and had taken possession of the machine. Accused was sentenced to 31 days’ imprisonment on the first charge and to a month on the latter, the sentences to be concurrent. By-Law Breaches. For riding cycles at night without lights Victor Milton Rowland, Stanley Gordon Birehall and Edmond Courtney Fenton were each fined .10s, with 10s costs. Arising out of a collision Enoch Bruce Levy was charged with driving a vehicle while not having a motor driver’s license. He was fined 10s, and 10s costs. Herbert James Morgan was obilged to pay £1 and costs for tailing to notify within seven days the ehange of ownership of a motor cycle. A line of £2 and costs was inflicted on Ivan Parkinson for riding an unregistered motor cycle, lie was also fined 10s and costs for failing to produce a driver’s license. Breach of Arms Act. Three charges of breaches of the Arms Act were preferred against Ernest Frederick Clausen who was lined 10s and costs on each count. Miscellaneous Charges. "William Patrick Casey, for being on licensed premises at Shannon while a prohibited person, was fined 10s, and 10s costs. A plea of guilty to making a false statement to the Unemployment office and thereby obtaining relief, was entered by George Hill Murdoch, butcher, of Palmerston North. He was represented by Mr. McLcavcy. . Mr. IV. H. Cadwalladcr, certifying officer, stated that Mrs. Murdoch had been employed at £1 7s fid weekly while Murdoch himself had been obtaining casual work as a butcher. lie had not mentioned these facts in the special form demanding such information. Tho fact that Murdoch had casual work would not have affected the position but ho had obtained £5 Is fid by misrepresentation. The Magistrate imposed a line of £2, with 10s costs, while a. month was allowed to pay the amount.
