Proportional Representation
CHRISTCHURCH MAY FORSAKE SYSTEM. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Last Night. ' An indication that the Christchurch City Council "ivill be asked to forsake the present system of election of councillors by proportional representation was given by the Mayor (Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) at a meeting of the City Council to-night. Mr. Sullivan said he anticipated that a motion to rescind the resolution adopting the system of proportional representation for the election of councillors, would be submitted shortly. Me asked the council to authorise him to take such action as might be necessary to have the existing negative system of striking out the names of candidates for whom the elector did .wt wish to vote altered to the positive system of placing a cross against the names of candidates for whom the elector desired to vote. The Auckland and Wellington City Councils lrad obtained authority to do this in local Acts, and it might be necessary for the council to promote a local Bill unless the Minister would agree to make the practice general by an amendment in the local Elections and Polls Act.
