Miss Eoaa Purton was the accompanist. What the Judges Think. Judges’-remarks were directed largc'‘'TyO'upon the lines of previous nights. Miss Madeline Vyuer, judge of dancing, said that in the classical section (over "12) a lot of “sloppy emotional stuff’’ was presented. It had too much pathos ■and lacked originality. It did not seem that people really felt what they claim- .-• Cd-to bo portraying. With proper treatment, there was no limit to what ■ ’’could'bo done in this branch of the art. yThe'winner's effort was an attempt at genuine interpretation, and was less stereotyped than the others, vjc la appraising and criticising the elocutionary work, Miss Beatrice MacKcnzie said that too many lyrical pieces -'‘were poorly interpreted. Artificial gestures —which were freely used, had -'little significance or value, and should bo' avoided. The ladies’ test pieco had I'offeWd somo pleasing work. The character pieco was goody with quite suit- ■ ■able pieces chosen. \ The vocal solos by girls under li con-
stituted a charming section, said Mr. Barry Coney, and he had experienced some difficulty in making a solution. Tho radio section was also a great pleasure. In the ladies’ national song, tho two competitors showed good training, and made good use of their voices throughout. Air. Gray (Wanganui) judgo in the brass section, stated that he was very pleased with the performances in both quartettes !lnd solos., He had detected many young soloists who gave great promise of developing into first-rate instrumentalists. After giving the bandsmen some sound advice as to how to approach their work, AJr. Gray congratulated the Competitions Society on their initiative in staging the section.
