The doath is announced from Sydney of Sir Alexander Jarvio Hood, aged 715. He was a distinguished surgeon. The Rev, D. I). Zaduk, a Christian minister of Armenia, arrived at Wellington yesterday by the Wangancllu from Sydney. Hotel' Imperial guests include Mrs Rawson, Mr I*l. \V. Rawson, Miss Duncan, Mr G. Sim miss and Mr H. Reeves (all of Wellington). Mr G. I>. B'rown, of Awnpuni, who entered a private hospital to undergo an operation, has now made suilicient progress to permit of his discharge. His many friends will wish him a speedy recovery. Mr Ernest Short, the well-known Wellington baritone, has left Wellington for Christchurch to take up his residence in that city. He has been appointed manager of the Christchurch Winter Gardens. Mr I’red M. Kennedy, son of Mr M. J. Kennedy, general manager and secretary of the Wellington Gas Companv and formerly of Palmerston North, 'ufe been appointed general manager and engineer of the Gisborne Gas Go. lie is expected to take up his duties during July next on his return from Loudon. Mr J. 13. Banks, of Palmerston North, who recently accepted a position in Auckland, has left for the north. Mr Banks, who is a son of Mr. John Banks, of Queen street, is an old Palmerston North High School boy, and was a keen member of the Old Boys' Rugby Club prior to becoming a golf devotee. The opportunity was taken by a number of his friends to farewell him, when a caso of pipes was presented to him as a small mark of the esteem in which he is held. It is Interesting to note that Mr Leonard P. Leary, of Auckland, who has been briefed with Mr E. H. Northcroft as counsel for William Alfred Bayly when he stands his trial on May--21 on charges of murder, is a former Palmerstonian. The second son of the late All* R. Leary, who was a wellknown chemist in Palmerston North in its earlier days, Mr Leonard Leary, after attending primary school at this centre, received his secondary- education at the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. After leaving the University Mr J. B. Ala w son, whose appointment as headmaster of St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, was aitnounced last week, took up teaching as a profession, and served at Palmerston North Boys’High School, Wellington College, Southland Boys’ High School, and finally as first assistant master at St. Andrew’s. In 1925, when a master at St. Andrew’s, lie was appointed an inspector of secondary- schools, the first occasion, it is believed, on whie.h such an appointment has been made from the staff of a secondary school. At the age of 83 years, Afr John Laird Alorrison passed away at Lower llntt on Saturday. Deceased 'was once interested in the New Zealand flax industry, and owned flaxmills at Spring Creek, Blenheim, Foxton and Bulls. Air Alorrison was also well known as a land valuer, and acted as an assessor in many cases, notably for landowners when the Government took over the Wellington-Afanawatu railway. lie was a well-known figure in the Native Lam! Court and had many friends among the Maori race.
