Horse Stealers Sent to Gaol
ECHO OF MAIN TRUNK THEFTS
In the Palmerston North Supreme Court last week two young men named Raymond Moran and Archibald Henri Sweibrttck were found guilty of the theft of horses at Waiouru. Yesterday they came before the Hon. Mr Justice Fair for sentence, Moran getting six months’ hard labour and Sweibruck throe months.
Both accused handed in letters asking for leniency and regretting their lapse. Ills Honour said the offences were serious ones and the probation officer could not recommend probation. The jury had quite properly looked on Moran as the prime mover in the escapade—he had planned the operations in the Waiouru district, which was widely scattered. Both, liowcvei, had previous convictions entered against their names dating back a year or two with only a minor offence recently. The sentences of six and threo months should be regarded as light ones under the circumstances, and were not, consequently, to be taken as nil excuse for straying from the path of .honesty in the future.
