Control of the Kairanga County

MEETING OF COUNCIL HELD,

Mr. D. Collis presided over yesterday's meeting of the Kairanga County Council, there being also present: Messrs. W. 6. Shannon, C. Anderson, P. Ct. Mildon, M. W. Yoss, R. A. Mercer, M. A. Moody and W. E. Hopcroft. Engineer’s Report.

The acting-engineer (Mr. L. G. Pickering) reported as follow upon works carried out during the past month:—

Taonui riding: The riding truck has been patching No. 1 line, Dampney’s road, Karcre road and Gillespie’s line. A small heap of metal has been carted to the Lockwood dump for winter use, A now drdin is now being dug on Kai-ranga-Bunnythorpc road between Rangitikci lino and Gillespie’s line, 30 chains having been completed. A new nine-inch pipe culvert has been put in to carry water across the road to the Drainage Board drain. The motor grader has been over more important reads cutting off corrugations and raking in line metal from sides. Mangaonc riding: Thirty chains of Cameron’s line has been scarified, rerollcd into shape and metalled. The roller Inis now been shifted to James’ line in preparation to building up sides of road near Sly’s. The county team has been carting out metal from Mangaonc stream and patching side-roads near Bunnythorpe. The truck has bccu kept continually busy patching the following roads: —Parr’s road, Robert’s line, Kelvin Grove road and Stoncy Creek road. Over three miles of watertables have been cleaned out on Cameron’s and Milson’s lines. The contractors for scaling of two miles of Kai-ranga-B-unnythorpc road have completed their work; there still remains six months’ maintenance period dur ing which time any defects will be made good by the contractor. Tar patching has been carried out on Tao-nui-Fcilding road and Kairanga-Bunny-tliorpc road. Extensive patching work will be required on Rangitikci line this vear on the hot mix portion laid down four years ago when it will require tc be re-scaled next financial year; this work also applies to a portion of Foxton line.

Fitzhcrbert riding: The Linton gang l as finished walcrtabling and improving visibility on Hill Top road, and arc now stripping the pit on Kahutcrawa road. .Improvements to a corner on Millcrick's line/ by widening, cutting off corner and benching battens, has been completed. The request for improvement to awkward bend on Clifton road has been attended to; watertables were also cleaned out. Over five and a-lialf miles of watertables have been cleaned out on No. 4 line and Tiritca road. Stumps have bccu taken out on Barber’s flat, and the gang is now stripping metal face at Aokautcre in view of metalling immediately. A new cut has been put through in Tiritca stream, several stumps and obstructions have also been dragged from the stream lied, which were impeding the free flow of water. Riding trucks have been kept continually busy patching. The motor grader has been over more important roads only. —The report was adopted. Correspondence Matters.

The I’ahiatua County- Council, writing in regard to a complaint received by the Kairang'a County Council from Mr. G. Atkinson, of Makoinako, to the effect that the Tararna range road north was in a very bad condition. An inspection had been made and, whilst it was- admitted that the general surface was not good, it was tlie opinion

that the report had been grossly exaggerated. “Furthermore, most of the trouble has been caused through persons operating lorries for the cartage of firewood when tho road is not in a fit state through climatic conditions. It is tho intention of tho council to carry cut repairs at an early date and to close the road (until September 30) to all motor vehicles exceeding 2£ tons,” it was stated.

The Palmerston North Hospital Board forwarded a statement of estimates together with details of the levy struck for tho current year. —The chairman pointed out that the levy had increased, but had to be met. It was decided that payment be authorised. Advice was received from the Palmerston North Eiver Board that the protection work at Stuart>s bend had bc-cn completed, a grant of £GO towards tho cost being sought.—Tho amount was passed for payment. In regard to assistance rendered towards the support of rating liability, the Waitomo County Council returned thanks. “The views expressed by the various counties were considered by this council and as tho majority were in favour of first approaching the executive of the Counties’. Association before submitting a ‘test case,’ it was decided to adopt this course.—Rcccived. Tho District Highways Board No. 9 advised that tho next annual meeting had been fixed for May 16 at Palmerston North.

The Awapuni ranger (Mr. I. Baldwin) stated that he had dealt with 36 head of stock since last meeting and the Fitzhcrbert ranger (Mr. .T. Mining) 32 head.
