City Silver Band
ANNUAL REPORT
The annual report of tho Palmerston North City Silver Band records that the end of the year linds them witn sufficient moneys in hand and in view, to cnablo tho purchase of the uniforms, and the order for them has already been given. The cost of the uniforms, allowing for sales tax, will lie approximately £133. Apart from the raising of the moneys necessary to complete the purchase of the uniforms, t.lic band has further reduced its liability upon tho instruments, and there seems to be every reason for a confident belief that by the time the next annual meeting comes round, the band will be entirely free from debt. The fortunate position of the band in the matter of its finances has been due to a great extent to the support of the public. The financial statement show? that of a total income of £222 9s 4d, the sum of £147 9s 4d has been raised from donations, socials, dances and concerts. It was hoped that the City Council would see its way clear to deal a little more generously with the band in tho matter of a subsidy than it had done in past years. However, the council finds itself able to justify a policy whereby money available for the provision of band music to the citizens is not divided between the various bands according to the services they render to the city. The committee feels very strongly that it is the duty of the City Council to apportion the available funds on an equitable basis, having regard to the services performed by tho various bands, and it. is recommended that further strong representations bo made when the council again allots tho moneys available for band subsidies. Throughout the year, the public has accorded magnificent support to the band by its at tendance at the various concerts and dances arranged. The gratitude of the committee is due to those who have assisted in this manner. At the moment tho band is experiencing a little difficulty in. obtaining premises satisjactorv for use as a band room. They had the pleasure, during the vear, of seeing the Garrison. Hand carry off tho honours in tho A grade contest, and a message of congratulation was sent in the name cf the band and committee. "We would like to take this further opportunity of recording our congratulations to the Garrison Band and its conductor on their victory,” the report, adds. Tho thanks of the committeo and of the band were due in large measure to those who had worked so strenuously during the vear in the interests of the band. Particularly was this so in respect to those ladies who had worked to make the various dances such a success. Thanks were also duo to Mr O'Hara, the conductor, for his faithful service, and the bandsmen themselves were entitled in no small mcasuro to the thanks of the committee. Despite the handicap of being without uniforms, tho members had faithfully carried out their duties. Mr Abraham, tho hard-working secretary of the committee, had again given a great deal of his time to the service of the band, and the thanks of the committee were due to him for his activities. Thanks were also due to the president, Mr Maunder, for his support during the vear.
