Development Scheme On ’Quake Legacy
TRANSFORMING AHURIRI LAGOON NAPIER, April 12. Finality has been reached in an interesting development which is to take place in regard to the drainage and settlement of the Ahuriri lagoon area of 7500 acres, which in consequence of the earthquake three years ago, nas been transformed from a vast shallow lagoon to a tract of land which is practically dry. The work of developing the area is to be undertaken by a Smaii Farms Board which has taken a leiso from tho Napier Harbour Board, ami it is anticipated that some 300 families will be settled on small farms on the area. The scheme involves drainage works and the task of' draining, reading, etc., will provide useful employment for a large number of men. The whole scheme has been, thoroughly tested by Government departments, and experts have readied the conclusion that the area comprises land which, when drained and cultivated, will be very valuable.
