Women’s Division of The Farmers’ Union

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE PALMERSTON NORTH BRANCH. Tho annual meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at Messrs. Collinsou and Cunninghame’s yesterday afternoon, Mrs. W. Howell (Raumai) presiding over a large attendance. Annual Report. The seventh annual report stated:— “Our monthly meetings have been well attended and interest in the activities of our great organisation has been well maintained. We started the year with a credit of £4 ISs Id, and our credit to-day stands at £l2 Ss 3d, so that notwithstanding periods of depression, a sympathetic and generous baud of members has enabled us to carry on with our good work and still be able to show’ a credit. AVe have been instrumental in sending eleven housekeepers into country homes, during the past year, where help was badly needed on account of sickness in the family. In all but two of these cases the branch assisted in the payment of wages, etc. Several necessitous cases havo received assistance and in one case a needy person, a patient in the Public Hospital, was provided with the means of returning to friends in Wellington. Our contributions to tho community chest have amounted to £lO. During the past year -wo endeavoured to make one special effort to raise funds and concentrated on running a shop for tliroo days. Members worked hard and gave geneiouslj and farmers’ wives in the surrounding district kept us supplied with cakes and produce which found ready sale, and our profits amounted to nearly £3O. During November of last year w'C cooperated with the Central Relief Committee in their carnival for funds for the relief of distress and assisted in catering at the Spring Show’. The response was wonderful, and although entailing three strenuous days, those of the committee who could assisted from start to finish. Our social afternoons havo boon well attended, and thanks are due to tho talented ladies who have from time to time contributed items for our entertainment. During the year, Mrs. E. A. Shaw resigned from the branch and for her untiring energy and work during her six years as secretary, earned the thanks and gratitude of the organisation. Tho annual, conference was attended by the president and Mrs. Green, the president, also attending tho executive and housekeeper auxiliary meetings, while the delegates, Mesdames Shannon, Shaw, Green, Field and Davison, attended, tho provincial meetings at- Marton«|flPks are due to Mesdamcs Green aiSTFicid for their work as advisory members in connection with supplying householders. We also tender thanks to Miss Beard, of Messrs. Collinson and Cunninghame’s, for many little acts of kindness in rendering assistance,. also to Mr. Harrington for again auditing the books free of charge. In conclusion we thank Messrs. Collinson and Cunninghame for the free use of a room for all our meetings, and all who have helped by donations for stalls, otc., also all members of the committee for their co-operation in all undertakings dining tho past year.' ’ - The balance-sheet showed a credit as indicated, the report and balancesheet being adopted on the motion of the president. Mrs. Carson (Wanganui), a life member. extended congratulations on the statement of activities, and the sound financial position. Mrs. McCorkindale (Feihling), as a member of the Dominion executive, added her congratulations and said such a report must, gladden the hearts of those at headquarters. The branch had shown by their contribution of £IOO odd that they were, remembering the community chest, and in addition had expended over £7 in giving help. such a report. Mesdames Simpson (Newbury), J. McCool (Whakarongo), E. 0. Bond (Awaliuri), M. B. Davison (Eongotea), E. Conlin (Oroua Downs) and Hopcroft were elected as new members. Before vacating the chair for the election of president, Mrs. Howell voiced her appreciation of the loyai support accorded her by the committee throughout tho year. The resignation of Mrs. Shaw as secretary had been deeply regretted, she said, and she moved that, tho meeting place on record its appreciation of Mrs. Shaw’s great work for the branch over a period of six years. On the motion of Mrs. Nicderer, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Howell for tho able way in which she had carried through the work during tho year. In moving that Mrs. Howell be reelected to the chair for a further term, Mrs. Bond paid tribute to hor untiring efforts in carrying out her duties which had been fulfilled with dignity to herself and honour to the 'W.D.E.U. Mrs. Howell was unanimously reelected president. Vice-presidents were elected ns follow: Mesdames P. Bond, 1\ J. Nathan, W. Cl. Shannon, H. K. Green, Doherty and all others present were elected to the committee. Mrs. W. F. ’Field was elected secretary and Mrs. Davison, treasurer; Mesdames Green and Doherty were elected delegates to attend the provincial council meeting; and Mesdames H. Sinclair and W. F. Field were elected advisory members for the branch. On the motion of the president, it was agreed to forward a letter of thanks and appreciation to Mr. W. 0. Harrington for auditing the boons and civing most helpful advice. Mrs. Nicderer, provincial organiser, spoke of her desire to sep branches formed in every centre with all farm women as one family, and said that until each one realised her responsibility to tho movement its great aims could not bo achieved. She reminded the meeting that numbers counted in bringing about reforms. She indicated various ways in which interest might bo stimulated and wished the branch all success in the coming year. Miss McLagan paid a glowing tribute to tho work of tho division, which she said was doing the finest °f any women’s organisation m New Zealand and concluded with the hope that some of the excellent, schemes of tho piesident would come to fruition this year. Mrs. Mansford added hor congratulations to Mrs. Howell and her own Personal thanks to the country women for their response to any appeal for Mrs Howell briefly thanked the speakers for their kindly references to herself and tho meeting for her rejection, for she said her heart was really in the work. An adjournment was made for a. ei noon tea and before the meeting closed a comprehensive vote of thanks as indicated by the report, was carried by “tniTwiocst of Mrs. Moooford members » e roed to assist mill malusg roses for Mothers’ Daj. The secretary was authorised to convey to Mr. F. J. Nathan, the sympathy of members in his illness, with best wishes for his speedy return to health. Tentative arrangements were mado for celebrating the birthday of the branch, the offer of Mrs. Howell to provide tho cake, and of Mrs. Shannon to see to, the icing, being gratefully accepted. There were apologies from Mesdames D. Buchanan, J. A. Nash, J. L. Nash (Linton), T. Lynch, Batchelar, L. A. Abraham, Mitchell (Bunny thorpe), Best (Kairangn). In a covering letter Mrs. Abraham expressed her regret in not being able to attend the meeting and oxtended good wishes for continued success.

Prior to the annual meeting the usual monthly meeting was held, Mrs. Howell presiding, also present being Mcsdames Croucher, Cunningham, Rond. Green, Nicholls, Close, Hughes, Shannon, Swainson, Armstrong, Doherty and Field. An apology was received from Mrs, Davison, lion, treasurer, and sympathy was expressed with her in her recent accident. Mrs. Howell read the report of the recent provincial meeting and explained about the remits. She further gave an account of the Dominion president's recent organising tour in the district. A sum of £1 was voted to the provincial organising fund. The secretary reported that another housekeeper had been, engaged in the istrict,

Mr. and Mrs. Geoffrey Jeuno have returned to Gisborne after a holiday spent at Paekakariki as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Cullinane, of Feild-b-ig.

Miss A. Johansen, who severed her connection recently with tho Waliroonga Sanatorium and hospital, New South Wales, arrived this week in New Zealand, and is spending a few weeks at her parents’ home, “Halt Svea,’’ Palmerston North. Miss Johansen will later join the staff of tho Dannevirkc Hospital.
