Private advice received in Christchurch announces the death in England of Mr. Henry Joseph Beswick, aged 75, for many years one of the best-known public men in Christchurch. He was a barrister and a member of the iirm of Duncan, Cottcrill and Co. [Jo represented Canterbury at Rugby and was Mayor of Christchurch in 1896. lie married the second daughter of Sir James Mills. The executive committee of the Wellington Competitions Society lias appointed judges for the next; competitions as follow: Vocal, Mr. Kenneth North, Sydney; elocution, Mr. liowlett Ross, Melbourne; assistant adjudicator in elocution, Mr Barton Ginger, Wellington; fancy dancing, Miss Jean Horne, Auckland; national dancing, .Mr. Braid, Hawcra; instrumental music, Mr. Vernon Griffiths, Dunedin. The death has occurred of Rev. Al i'red Henry Julius, aged S 3, a cousin of Archbishop Julius. For twenty years lie was vicar of Akaroa, where he had been living in retirement since 1624. He was a Fast Grand Chaplain of the Masonic Grand Lodge of New Zealand. He was a keen student of polar exploration and had a remarkable polar library. Born in Suffolk (England), he spent many of his early years in Queensland.
A Gazette notice announces that the Teachers' Appeal Board for 1934 will consist of: —Chairman, Mr. T. R. CrcsswclJ; representatives of the Education Department, Messrs. W. S. La Trobc, E. J. Parr and J. W. Mcllraith; representatives of teachers, secondary schools, Messrs. F. H. Campbell and J. A. Colquhoun; technical schools, Messrs. T. B. Bowring and A. M. Jones; primary schools, Messrs. W. F. Abel, F. A, Garry, G. F. Griffiths and Margaret E. Magill. The death is cabled from London of tho lion. John Collier, the well-known artist, at the age of S 4. Although suffering from a form of paralysis for some time before his death he continued painting until a fortnight ago. He had been a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy since 1575 and submitted two recent works for the coming summer exhibition. He was one of England’s best-known painters because of the fact, that he tickled the public fancy by painting problem pictures, which kept the sight-seers in the galleries guessing. One of his laige canvasses hangs in the Auckland Art Gallery.
