Splendid Result of Rate Collection

OVER 95 PER CENT. PAID. Tho financial position of the borough was placed before the meeting of the Feilding Borough Council last evening by the treasurer, Mr.- N. C. Hard ing. Commenting on tho position, the Mayor (Mr. U. E... Taylor) said he was glad to sec that tho report made fairly satisfactory reading. Tho report showed that on March 31, 1033, the district fund account was in credit by £269 13s fid, .but at the end of .March last there was a debit. of £125 Us 3d so that from a cash point of view, tho borough was- worse off by £395 4s sd. The' position of tho finances, including outstanding rates was thgt at March 31, 1933, the assets were £1589 4s Gd. At the end of March last the assets wero £1022 10s ocl made up of £ll4B Is Gd rates outstanding less the £.125 Us 3d debit in tho district fund account. The net result was a loss iu assets' for tho year of £566- 14s 3d, as nga'inst an estimated deficiency of £045. ' The revenue for the year, including No.. 5 scheme wages not entered through tho books, was £13,257 14s 4d. Expenditure had amounted to £40,352 38s-9d, which, with £2030 0s lOd shown as a balanco on April 1, 1933, made the'total expenditure £42,4.13 5s 7d. This left a net credit balance of £874 Ss 9d.

As regards rate collections, arrears received amounted to £753 31s 2d and current rates collected totalled £13,709 Os lOd. The amount levied was £14,485 19s 3d, so that the figures showed that £ll over 95 per cent, had been collected of current rates. The Mayor said the treasurer was to be congratulated on the success of the rate collections which had been eminently satisfactory for such a year as the country had passed through. Cr. McCorkindale: It spetiks well for the stability ol' . tho town. Cr. Kellow: It will be pretty hard to beat anywhere. The Mayor: Twelve months ago, Cr. Kellow, you predicted we would have a debit of £I2OO. (Laughter.) As regards the estimates for the com ing year, the council decided that rates be levied on, a proportionate part being not less than 80 per cent, of the values appearing on the valuation roll.
