Women's Institutes

BILVERHOPE A very interesting and instructive afternoon was spent when the Silverhope Women’s Institute met for their November meeting, Mrs. Aldworth presiding over a large attendance of members. A comprehensive and interesting report of tho Turakina Conference was road. A donation of butter is to be sent to Wanganui nB the Silverhopo contribution to the catering for the A. and P. Show. It was decided to hold a children’s Xmas Tree party on Friday, December 15. ’ The president then introduced Mr. E. M. S. Jones who gave a very interesting and instructive address on the Government of our Educational System. The speaker was followed with keen interest and appreciation. Miss Tomlinson sang a favourite old song members joining in the chorus. After afternoon tea which was dispensed by Mesdames Abel Powoll and Higgins, the president on behalf of the institute, presented Mrs. Morton and Miss Burrows with wedding gifts and wished them all future happiness. 1 Baby Doole, the first Institute boy baby, received a small sum, the nucleus of a banking account. Mrs Boper very ably demonstrated cake icing, answering numorous questions. The competition results were: Best Semco apron, Miss McDonald 1 and 3, Mrs. Johnstone 2; prettiest apron, Mrs. Boper I Mrs. Bartlett 2, Miss Burrows 3. Our libary which was recently opened is proving very popular and many books have been donated. Mrs. Morion Coleman is now in charges of recipes and patterns. The meeting closed with tho singing of the National Anthem. At the nest meeting on December 13 at 2 p.m. sharp the competition will be a. cotton frock, complete with accessories to cost not more than 5s and to be worn by the maker. HOEOEKA The November meeting of the Horocka W.I. was held at the home of the president, Mrs Lunt, there being an excellent attendance. It was decided to send a Christmas parcel of cakes and magazines to the women inmates of the Porirua Mental Hospital. All members were of opinion that the competition for a child’s knitted garment, which wan held last winter, be made an annual one and the garments be given to needy cases. It has been arranged to have a Christmas party for the children of the district, and a 6d "bring and buy’’ was held to raise funds to procure gifts for the Christmas tree. Business ended, the president introduced Miss Maddever, a demonstrator from Wellington. Miss Maddever was most interesting, not only with her demonstrations but also with hints and recipes of various kinds, and a most enjoyable tim6 was spent. Mrs Clemens presented Miss Maddever with a beautiful bouquet. Afternoon tea and the National Anthem brought to a, close a most instructive and enjoyable afternoon, CHELTENHAM There was a very large attendance at the Cheltenham W.I. on Wednesday last, when Mrs Marumaru, of Bulls, demonstrated basket making. Some very pretty samples were shown and members were particularly interested in the woven flax baskets. Before commencing the business the president asked all members to stand and pass a vote of sympathy with Mrs Bcatsori in the tragic loss of her husband. It was decided to enter for the Feilding Horticultural Society’s spring show, and Mrs Swainson and Mrs Andrews agreed to take charge and select the blooms for exhibition. It was also decided to enter for two classes in the National Flower Show in Palmerston North, the handcraft display and the flower and vegetable display. Mrs Barltrop presented a very comprehensive report of the half-yearly council meeting held at Pahiatua. A display of handcrafts was also held preparatory to undertaking the, exhibitions at the shows, and some very fine examples of work were brought in. The hostesses were Mrs Cameron, Airs Crane and Mrs Cla.pham, who were accorded the usual votes of thanks. GROUP MEETING AT LONGBURN The initial meeting of the newlyformed Longburn group of Women’.') Institutes was held in the Longburn Hall last Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Lemberg presided over an attendance of about 150 members, representative of the following institutes: —Longburn, Tiakitahuna, Tiritca, Aokautere, Whakarongo, Mi Ison and Kairanga. Mrs Lemberg welcomed the visitors and apologised for the unavoidable absence of Miss Grant. Mrs Paterson, of Pahiatua, the Dominion president, was present and congratulated the group on tho splendid appearance of the hall, which had been specially decorated, and also complimented the local members on the display of handicrafts. Mrs Paterson also spoke interestingly on the aims and objects of women’s institutes. A competition for a trophy presented by Miss Grant was won. by Miss Small, of Kairanga. Mrs Paterson was presented with a dainty posy of spring flowers. The following concert items were rendered: Community singing, led by the Milson Institute; elocutionary items, 1 Miss Robinson, Mrs Penketh, Mts King and Miss V, Zurcher; vocal items, Mrs Amadio and Mrs Buchanan. A dainty afternoon tea was served, the local members acting as hostesses. A. highly successful meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
