There's Magic in the Postman's Knock
That the postman is the friend of all in weal or woe will be generally admitted. Carrying as ho doos tho tidings that make us glad or sad, ho holds a very special place in the everyday life of the community. This has never been more strikingly exemplified than in the recent appeal to the citizens of Palmerston North on behalf of the Central Relief depot. Thore have been so many appeals for contributions to the Central Relief in the past few years—wardrobes have been exhaustively combed over—that the housewife must be hard put to it, however generouß-minded she might be, to contribute another garment. However, there’s magic in the postman’s knock, which brought forth such a generous offering on a recent Saturday. It would appear from the contributions assembled that considerable sacrifice has been made.
Tor some daya past an energetic band of ladies, comprised mainly of members of the clothes committee, nas been busily engaged in creating order out of chaos in the principal "dump" at the Showgrounds. The task has been a distinctly formidable one, as the range of articles handed over to "postio” included everything- from a baby’s bootee to sewing machines and iron bedsteads. The first step, taken was to sort out everything known by .the name of bottle, and these made quite an extensive pile in one corner of the hall. They arc now stacked in neat, orderly rows, awaiting removal. Their sale has realised £7 —a handsome amount in view of the recent "corner” in bottles by the Boy Scouts. The work of sorting the innumerable articles of clothing—it is estimated that some 5000 bundles were received —is proceeding apace, and it is hoped that the supplies will be available for issue from the depot next week. There will also be a conglomeration of articles, unsuitable for immediate distribution, which it is intended to realise on as soon as possible* This should materially increase the monetary returns from the drive. It was affirmed by one of the helpers that there was everything represented except a piano and a motor-car. The food supplies gathered in are already being put to good use at the depot, Altogether, tho results of tho effort aro such that members of the "postie” brigade may well give each other a hearty pat on the back. They certainly deserve it.
