Sorting Out the Rainbow
Names of colours arc frequently a delusion and a snare. A demand for “sky-blue,” for instance, often results in “sky-blue” curtains which clash with “ sky-blue ’ ’ walls, and both with, tho actual sky! Therefore, an attempt to standardise colours is being mado by the British Colour Council.
When, the Council experts have sorted out some 200 colours, decided what they are, and given them names, “old rose” will no longer do duty for anything between “apricot” and “plum,” nor will the colours of the Mediterranean, a violet., and the Royal Air Force be reproduced in dress material and ribbon as “ease blue.”
All tho trades concerned with colour, from makers of tiles and woollens to makers of paint-boxes and gloves, -will assist a-t this colour christening, but whether fashion will adopt thoir chosen names or prefer to invent its own is on the lap of the gods and tho women.
