The deputy leader of the Labour party, Mr. M. J. Savage, iu the course of a policy address in the Town hall at Auckland on Wednesday night, said that some people thought there should bn an investigation of the present currency and banking system, but Labour was not prepared to allow those who were charged with failure to constitute the investigating tribunal. He suggested that those who were working for currency reform should see there were no divisions in the ranks whon it came to a general election. There had been many kinds of red herrings thrown across the path in tho past and currency reformers could not do better than support the party whiqh had and still stood for currency reform and already had 24 members in the House, not including Lyttelton, which looked a ccrtaiajy. for Labour-
The settlement of Hie dispute cn the Tawa Plat railway deviation, as the result of which 120 tunnellcrs have been on strike since August S, was announced yesterday by Mr. A. Cook, tho general secrotary of the New Zealand Workers' Union. Tho men are to resume work on Monday morning. He said the Minister of Public Works (Hod. J. Bitcherter) had agreed to pay £1 a shift to all men engaged in the bad “break" for a fortnight, which time was considered ample to finish tho “break." The Minister also had agreed to regard tho men's holiday privileges as being not affected by their action in ceasing work during the period of tho negotiations. Tho conditions of tho settlement had been submitted to a full meeting of the men and by a large majority it had been agreed to resume work.
