The Saga of Douglas
Tired, dusty, and footsore, but still the complete optimist, a .tiny figure tugged at the coat of a Brighton policeman with the plea: “Could you mend a puncture for me, please?” It was Britain’s Most Determined Small Boy —Douglas Priest, aged 10, who had pushed his toy cycle forty weary miles from Whyteleafe, Surrey, for a glimpse of the sea. All day long ho had pedalled in the procession of cars, coaches -and motor-cyclists, an incongruous little figure determined to get there. A kindly policeman took charge of him and before he was returned to his frenzied parents he was given a glorious half-hour’s “leave” on the beach.
