Mr. J. 11. Hughes, Palmerston North city engineer, is confined to his home with an attack of influenza. Cr. G. Tremaine, who has been confined to his homo with sickness, w r as accorded a motion of sympathy at last night’s meeting of the City Council. Earl Beauchamp, who has been spending a holiday in Tahiti, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the Maunganui. Ho is proceeding to Sydney, where he will join his son. Guests at the Hotel Imperial include Mr. H. Pearson (Wellington), Mr. Woodgcr Smith (Hamilton), Mr. Hollie (Millcrton), Mr. E. W. Lcuro (Auckland), Mr. McFarlano (Auckland). Mr. T. C. List, of New Plymouth, Governor of Botary in New Zealand, returned to Now Zealand by the Maunganui yesterday after attending the International Botary Convention at Boston.
Cr. W. H. Brown, who has been indisposed for the past week or so, is reported to bo progressing toward recovery. Ho was unable to be present at last evening's meeting of tho City Council when hopes for liis complete return to health were expressed. Hr. Bathgate, of Hastings, and Mr. P. N. Bundle, of Dunedin, -were among visiting Botarians at yesterday’s meeting of the Palmerston North Club. Greetings conveyed by them to Palmerston North members were heartily reciprocated.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Palmerston North Botary Club, congratulations were extended to two members in Messrs A. D. Campbell and D. P. Bmillie who cclebrato their silver weddings this week. On behalf of the club, Botarian W. G. Black asked these members to convey its best wishes to their wives.
Mr. E. McGregor, of Ohingaiti, is staying at Terraco End with his son, Captain M. C. McGregor, who was injured at the air pageant at Milson aerodrome. The patient is making steady progress and is now' able to take exercise. He looks forward to complcto recovery and a resumption of flying at no distant date.
At last night’s meeting of the Northern Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club, a motion of thanks was accorded Mr. H. L. Thirtlc, the club’s honorary auditor, who has been compelled to retire from the positiou on account of his pending departure for Wellington. Tribute was paid both to Mr. Thirtlo’s splendid services as auditor and to his w'elcomo presence at all times as a member of tho bowling section. Acknowledging tributes paid him, Mr. Thirtle said his association with the club had been particularly happy, and ho would always recall with pleasure tho time ho had spent on the greens there. Only removal from the district had occasioned his resignation. Mr. Alfred Ernest Allison, who has been Commissioner of tho Government Life Insurance Department sinco 1926, will retire at the cud of September. Mr. Allison has been connected with the department for 47 years. . Bom in 1569 Mr. Allison received his educatho Christchurch Boys’ High School. He joined the Government Life Insurance Department at. Christchurch as a cadet in June, 1886, and it was not long beforo his capabilities were recognised. After serving as a clerk at Christchurch, lie was in 1594 appointed manager of tho Grcymouth branch, with control over the whole of tho West Coast business. Later he served as manager at Wanganui, Invercargill, Dunedin and Wellington, being appointed to Wellington in 1919. Ho was appointed Commissioner in 1926, succeeding Mr. A. T. Travcrsi.
