Woodville

From Our Own Correspondent

A largo crowd turned out to witness tlie meeting of tlio Woodville and Hui Mai hockey teams on Wednesday afternoon. Both teams were very evenly matched and a close, hard game resulted in Hui Mai securing the verdict by 3 goals to 2. Woodville went quickly to the attack, but good defensive work by Hui Mai kept their goal intact. Play then veered rapidly from one end of the ground to the other, but neither side could manage to score. Twice Woodville netted but were called back for a breach of the rules and the half-time whistle sounded with no score on cither side. The second spell opened sensationally, Hui Mai securing three goals in rapid, succession, Boustead securing the first from a past passing rush, H. Ward scoring the second from a penalty bully in Woodville’s goal mouth and the same player also netting the third. Woodville then took a turn at attacking and after repeated thrusts L. Rendlo found the net with a hot shot. Shortly afterward Strand scored, but from then on despite many attempts Woodville were unable to add to their score, and the final scoro remained in Hui Mai’s favour by 3 goals to 2. A ladies’ match between the Kongotane and Woodville teams played afterwards also was productive of some good hockey, and after a fairly even gamo Rougotane succeeded in -winning by 2 goals to 1. Mr W. Curran, of the local railway staff, met -with an exceedingly painful accident on Tuesday afternoon. While engaged in cleaning the roof of a railway carriage he slipped and fell on the carriage couplings, being unfortunate enough to dislocate .both shoulders. He is reported to be now progressing as well as possible.
