Oroma Downs
From Our Own Correspondent. When tiro school committee commenced its present tenure of office it was felt that in arranging attractions for the coming winter in order to raise money for the cocoa fund and to meet other expenses not covered by the capitation grant, some reorganisation was necessary. In order to reduce the expenditure for prizes at ilio card evenings it was decided to cut out crlbbage. It was then necessary to provide some attraction for those who did not wish to play euchre or 000, and it was thought that ping pong might meet the case. That this view was fully justified was amply proved on Thursday night when a uv*-ge and appreciative company spent a very enjoyable evening. Besides ping pong-, euchre and 500, an old-time dance was in full swing during the latter part of the evening and with cosy log fires and a good supper, patrons received ample value for their shilling. The committee is indebted to Messrs S. Curran and J. B. Bennett for the ping pong tables and to Mr. J. Scott for providing the music (accordeon) for the dancing; also Mrs. W. Scott for playing extras on the piano. After cards a dainty slipper was handed round by the ladies of the committee. The prize winners were as follow: Euchre: men, Mr. P. Riehana; consolation, Mr. P. Rivers. Ladies, Mrs. Tlbery; consolation, Sirs. E. Conian. 500: Men, Mr. T. Scott; consolation, Air. Cook. Ladies, Mrs. H. Proctor; consolation, Miss W. Jarvis. A competition for Maori handiwork kindly donated by Mrs. P. Iliebana was won by Mr. R. Reas’. Thirty-four games of ping pong were played between two teams, A and B, and resulted in,a draw, each team winning 17 games. One player, S. Curran, won all his games. Mr. J. B. Bennett was in charge of the scoring board. The following are the results, A team members being mentioned first in eacli case:—D. Cowdrey 31 beat A. Hobbs 26; L. Davey 31 beat A. Nichols 28; S.
