Winooka’s First Race
TRAINEE WOULD LIKE EXTRA FORTNIGHT United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Monday, 7 p.m. SAN FRANCISCO, July 17. Winooka’s training is continuing satisfactorily and consists of trotting and galloping daily. Ho will make a public trial run on Saturday. Howover, some question concerning the advisability of holding the proposed Winooka-Frisky Matron race on the date arranged has been raised by trainer Poison, who says he fears the Australian horse will not be at his best, and he would like an extra two weeks’ preparation to feel safer about the outcome of it. He points out that defeat on his first appearance would be disastrous to the American invasion. The Winooka backers have been offered a match race at the Gcrsham track early in August, but it has been indicated that it would be refused because of the short circumference of the track. SEASON DRAWING TO CLOSE The present racing season is now drawing near its close, but there are still several meetings to be held before me new season opens on August 1. The most important fixture this week is the Auckland Racing Club’s special meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday. Other meetings will be those at the Waimate Hunt Club (Thursday), South Canterbury Hunt. Club (Saturday) and Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club (Saturday). Next week there will be five more meetings (three of them hunt fixtures), which will draw the curtain finally on the present term. The Awapuni-trained Omeo, winner of the Wellington Steeplechase, has won £2305 to date.
The hurdle horseman, E. C. Miles, will he riding at the Auckland Eacing Club’s special meeting next Saturday, when his mounts will include Wiltshire and Cruachan. According to a message received in Auckland, Ammon Ea is working particularly well at Eandwick and is likely to have an outing under silk next month. CURIE REHANDICAPPED Curie has been Tehandicapped 51b to 10.8 in the Abbotsford Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay Hunt meeting on Saturday. MORRATH AND HER RIDER Morrath and her rider, W. J. McDowell, one of R. E. Hatch’s apprentices, achieved the distinction of winning the first hurdling event they had contested when they led all the way to score in the Talavera Hack Hurdles at Trentham on Saturday. She and Ivnollmere early cleared out together, and when the latter went back with a bad jump at the five furlongs she stuck to her guns under fire from Eamuna, whom she beat to the post in a good finish. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. HANDICAPS DECLARED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURH, Last Night. The following handicaps for the Grand National Steeplechase, G.N. Hurdle Race and Winter Cup have been declared by Mr. J. E. Henrys:— GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLE-
MERCIAN PRINCE A GOOD SORT Mr. H. E. Connop has always hmu a high opinion of Mercian Prince and when asked to put a price on the gelding ho mentioned a fairly substantial figure. No business resulted at the time and .tlio owner will have no reason to feel disappointed about the matter for Mercian Prince has run consistently well during the last month or two. Royal Song, Mercian Prince’s dam, also owned by Mr. Connop, is the only daughter of the Vasco horse, Garance, at present at the stud. Her dam was Pastoral, by Royal Eusilier, son of Hotchkiss, and among the few other members of this branch of the No. 4 family who have raced recently are Princess Betty, Chief Line, Vivo and Glenartney. FAILED TO REPRODUCE FORM The Mosgiel owned and trained Town Major has not reproduced the form that made him such a formidable horse in the middle-distance handicaps under winter conditions. He ran only moderate races at Trentham last week but at one time the course used to be a happy hunting ground for him.
