From Our Own Correspondent. Tho July meeting of the Aslihurst Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs H. Fenwick presiding over the usual good attendance. Apologies were received from Mesdames A. W. Trass and R. E. Fordyce, while one new member, Mrs F. N. Rosenbeck, was welcomed. The report presented by the secretary (Mrs H. Woodroofe), in connection with tho dance held on the 30th June disclosed that the function had proved a great success both socially and financially. Votes of thanks were accorded Mesdames J. Edmond, J. H. Sumner, F. A. Dunstall, E. Morris, W. S. Fairless and R. Jones for donating trophies; to Mrs J. Edmond and Mr W., Smith for judging the waltzing competition; Mesdames J. Flowers and T. Paton, doorkeepers, and also to the ladies who assisted with the supper. Peggy squares numbering 63 had been forwarded to and acknowledged by 2ZO. During the afternoon Mrs A. A. Hall, of Hiwinui, gave a demonstration on cane tray making which was greatly appreciated. The cane basket made during the demonstration was donated as a prize for me cooking competition. The cane work appealed to a large number of members, and arrangements were made for a class to be held at the residence of Mrs l-i. Borrett at 2 p.m. on July 25 when further demonstrations will be given by Mrs Hall. The roll call “Where I was born,” created surprise and amusement. Ashhurst proving the birthplace of only three members. Mrs H. Wilson who judged the shortbread competition, found her task a most difficult one, there being a large number of excellent entries. First prize was gained by Mrs H. Woodrofe, with Mrs H. Fenwick second, and Mrs W. N. Brewer third. For the meeting in August members are asked to “Bring and Buy,” the proceeds to go to the Federation fund. The competition will be a baby’s knitted singlet, the garments to be donated to the Institute for the plunket Society. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames J. H. Sumner, W. B. Smith, Misses . Snelling and I. Fenwick. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close 1 a most interesting afternoon. Mr A. Thompson, of the local post office staff, has received notice of transfer to Ormondville. He will be replaced by Mr R. A. Johnstone, of Manaia.
