Palmerston North Hospital Board Meets

ACTIVITIES REPORTED ON. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board was held yesterday, Mr. J. K. Hornblow presiding. Also present were Mrs.' L. A. Abraham and Messrs. J. Hodgens, W. Howell, M. A. Moody, 0. McElroy, D. Collis, A. E. Hansford, V. E. Smith, G. A. Monk, R. L. C. Aitckison, J. Boyce, G. P. Catley and J. A. Nash, M.P. The following statistics were set out in the report of the medical superintendent (Hr. F. G. Ward): —Patients remaining in hospital, 31/5/33, 206; patients admitted during June, 210; patients discharged, 206; patients, died, 6; patients remaining in hospital, 30/6/33, 204; daily average number of occupied beds, 203.53; number on waiting list, 30/6/33, 1. Maternity home: Admitted during June, 19; births, 21; attended ante-natal clinic, 60; remaining in homo, 30/6/33, mothers 7, babies 7. The acting-matron (Sister Gedney) reported that the health of the staff was good. Donations had been received as follow: Vegetables,Mrs. Feigler (Levin); magazines," Mrs. Stewart (Halcombe), Mrs. Abraham and Mrs. O. Stephens. The district nursing reports showed the following figures: Treatment cases, Palmerston North, 29, Feilding, 17; visits, Palmerston North, 248, Feilding, 208, Shannon, 292; fees receivable, Palmerston North £2 10s 6d, Feilding £3 11s, Shannon, £8 4s 6d. The farm committee reported that it had conferred with Mr. J. B. Hughes, the city engineer, who submitted certain suggestions regarding banking. It was agreed to recommend: —(1) That tho scheme of banking as proposed by the committee bo proceeded with subject to the amendment suggested by Mr. Hughes to the effect that the position of the bank should be altered somewhat at the northern end of the accretion; (2), th&t the adjoining owners be approached to secure their consent to the proposed work; (3), that the City Council be asked to approve tho scheme proposed and to permit the city engineer to assist with advice and to take levels in preparation for the work. It was resolved to thank Mr. Hughes for his advico and assistance in this matter. —It was decided to seek.tho necessary permission from the property owners and to ask the City Council for its approval. The* medical superintendent at the Otaki Sanatorium reported that .there wore 51 patients in tho institution on June 1. Eight patients were admitted and six discharged. The Otaki Sanatorium committee reported that it had considered a special report from the managing-secretary in connection with the visit to the Cashmere Santorium. Arising out of this report it was decided (inter alia) that the medical superintendent and matron bo asked to confer and to submit a report on tho present system of nursing and domestic staffing, and to defer'the matter of vocational training for consideration at a later date.

• Managing-Secretary's Report. \ 'lnter ' alia, the managing-secretary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps) reported as follows: Painting: The renovations of the Royal Alexandra ward are now nearly completed and the patients will shortly be transferred back from ward IV.

No. 5 labour: The farm committee considered tho proposed stop-bank at Awapuni and the city engineer has now completed the plan showing the proposed position of the stop-bank. If the adjacent owners' consent is received within the next few days, it will be possible to commence work promptly. In the meantime I have kept on during the month the full quota of No. 5 men both at the farm and the hospital
