Taranaki Deluged By Heavy Rain

DAMAGE BY FLOODS NEW PLYMOUTH, July 17. Tho heaviest rainfall for three years fell on Saturday and Sunday in New Plymouth, causing floods in a number of places and other damage. For the 24 hours ended at 7.30 a.m. on Sunday tho rainfall in New Plymouth was 2,53 inokes. On Sunday afternoon the water level at the intako of Lake Mangamolioo, from which tho town’s water supply and electric power come, rose from its normal height of 2 feet 6 inches to 17 feet.

The Mangatuku stream, flowing through Now Plymouth, caused considerable damage. One house was imperilled by a largo slip a few yards away. Very heavy Tain also fell in tho Ohura district, which is isolated, road communication on both sides being blocked.

On- the Stratford-Main Trunk line the Okahulcura tunnel is blocked by a slip and the Tukua low-level bridge is under water.

At Inglewood the phenomenal fall of 5.01 inches occurred in the 24 hours preceding 9 a.m. yesterday —the heaviest fall since 1921. The Main North road to Auckland from New Plymouth was blocked for some time by a large slip at Tongaporutu. Flooding occurred at Uruti, Poi Poi and other parts of the road.
