Death of Early Mariner

RACED SCHOONER ACROSS TASMAN Per Press Association ROTORUA, Last Night. Tho death has occurred of Mr. Edward Quinlan, aged SO, ono of the earliest master mariners trading in tho New Zealand coastal trade and to Australia. With a small crew ho sailed the Ladybird, a small 21-tou register ship, from Newcastle to Wellington, Tacing a thrCo masted schooner in a challenge race across the Tasman. After leaving the sea ho accepted a position on tho Wellington Harboui Board and was for many years head signalman at- Queen’s wharf. Mr. Quinlan had many recollections of the early days of tho Union Company when the service was operated entirely with sailing vessels.
