Thousands of Bottles
SPLENDID RESULT OF BOY SCOUT DRIVE
Palmerston North Boy Scouts made history on Saturday when they swooped down on the city in a bottle raid in aid of tho Mayor's Relief Fund, and boforo the day was out had collected no fewer than 75,000—0 r approximately 3i bottles for every inhabitant of the city. Now the Scout hall in Ferguson street is literally flooded out with bottles, tho spacious building being at least 2ft. bin. deep in glass with planks spread over tho top for tho Scouts to cross over. A more cosmopolitan heap of glassware has probably never been seen in Palmerston North before. There aro all kinds, shapes, sizes and colours and five lorries wero kept busily engaged clearing the heaps from tho streets as the boys built up their dumps. The drive was most successful, the outstanding features being the response by householders and the spirit of the 200 boys who set out on their arduous task at 8 a.m. and did not cease until 3 p.m. The job was far greater than was anticipated—nobody could forscc that thcro wero so many empty bottles in the city. It is known that quite a number of houses have been missed and these residents arc asked to advise either Mr. N. D. Stubbs (tho Square), Mr. T. Coles (Terrace End), the Miramar Dairy (Russell street) or ring phone 5258, and Scouts will call for the bottles on Wednesday. The next big job is that of sorting and the work will involve hours of labour. It is calculated that even if the bottles averago tho small sum of 4d per dozen, the Mayor's relief fund will benefit to tho extent of over £IOO. Such an effort can only be described as magnificent.
