Heavy Winter Rainfall in Feilding

EXCEPTIONAL WEEK-END DOWNPOUR Feilding’s winter drought broke on Saturday afternoon when steady rain commenced to fall to produce a total of 1.45 inches for tho 20 hours up to 9 o ’clock yesterday morning. This figure is quite the heaviest recorded for many years during the winter months, stated Mr. F. Mason, of Sandou road, Feilding, yesterday. Feilding’s winter rainfall lias often exceeded 1.00 inches, rising to 1.30 and sometimes to 1.36 for 24 hours, but tho fall over Saturday and Sunday was quite the heaviest. In April, 1929, 1,67 inches fell in 24 hours —an autumn downfall of. exceptional dimensions, and February 1932, records a summer deluge of 2.15 inches for 24 hours. Mr. Mason stated that apart from the predictions of rain ho anncipated that Feilding was in for a regular soaking by the jerky movement of the barometer on Friday night and Saturday morning. The indicator moved down in jerks to register yesterday 20.75—n0t a very low reading but one in keeping with the rainfall.

The rain continued steadily throughout yesterday and the whole countryside showed signs of the soaking it had received overnight. The warmer weather suggested the possibility of the Oroua river flooding in consequence of the melting of the snow on the ranges but yesterday morning found the river quite normal. If the warmer conditions continue, considerable flooding is quite likely.
