Scout and Cub Notes

(By “Totara.”)

Handicrafts.

This week, boys, I am going to give you something quite easy, but novertholoss quite interesting. Have you tried making printing outfits from linoleum? You take an ordinary piece of thick linoleum of plain colour. Trace on it a drawing of any design you require, then with your pocket-knife cut out all the linoleum round the drawing. You will find if you ink those well on a stamp pad they will make quito useful decorations for the concert programme or for your troop log. Now for the Cubs. Get your Cubmaster to get you an old tube from some motor garage; cut it down the inner side and open it out flat. Now trace on to a piece of cardboard any animal you desire to make, and cut out tho animal on the cardboard. Next place the cardboard on to tho rubber and draw with a pencil all round this on to the rubber. Do this again and cut out both the drawings. You can then sew these two together, leaving a small space unsown. Through this hole you stjxff paper until the animal is as “fat” as you want it. Then finish tho sowing and you will have a very useful toy for your young brother or sister.

First Palmerston North (Central) Troop: What has happened to the scribe for this troop? We have not heard from him recently. Perhaps he is too busy with his First Class work. All the samo we want to know what is going on. Fourth Palmerston North (All Saints’) Troop paid a surprise visit to First Troop on Monday night and spent a most enjoyable evening. One boy said that the time went like a flash, so it must have been good. Fifth Palmerston North (Te Awe Awe) Group: The troop made a start with its monkey bridge last Friday night and the A.S.M, had quite an interesting time testing out lashings on this work. Congratulations to Scout Petersen on passing his Second Class badge. “Chick” Watson has joined the troop and is welcomed among these lads. Happy days, “Chick,” and good Scouting. Sixth Palmerston North (Northern) Troop: Through tho kindness of the High School Board of Governors, this 'troop has been able to establish its own headquarters at the old Hostel in North Street. The patrol leaders held a “closed court” there on Wednesday, and arrangements are under way to have this new “homo” made really Scouty. This troop will resume its weekly meetings to-night and soon they will be well into their stride again. Seventh Palmerston North (Takaro) Group: The troop had a good muster again last week and they have devised some excellent games for signalling and observation. The latter is a new form of Elm's game, where a boy is asked to have all Sorts of extraordinary things hanging from his pockets and his uniform. He could even wear a shirt or a pair of “longs” if he liked and a “top” hat in place of his Scout hat. After walking slowly across the flooT, patrols have to write down what they saw and the various reports are vcTy interesting. Fourth Palmerston North (AH Saints’) Pack: The pack thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the birthday party given by the Seventh Pack. It was a "cubby” thought of the Takaro Pack to have invited them. P.L. R. Parkes and P. 2nd. R. Cameron . are helping with the pack on meeting nights and consequently the work is going ahead. The pack has commenced haudi. crafts for the winter nights and we look forward to seeing their efforts. Fifth Palmerston North (Te Awo Awe) Pack: Billie Wollerman and D. Clayton joined the pack last Saturday, and everybody enjoyed the meeting. 'Hard work is being put in for the ‘First Star test and soon we hope to record a good number of passes. Seventh Palmerston North (Takaro) Pack: A very pleasant evening was spent on Wednesday, June 21, when the pack held its first birthday. Commissioner Callis and tho AH Saints’ Home Pack were with them, and it was a great sight to see 33 cubs sitting round a long table, all wearing paper hats and pulling bon-bons, and doing full justice to those things which please every boy’s inner-man. The birthday cake was a picture before the feast —‘and a wreck afterwards. It represented the jungle and was iced with green icing and decorated with small trees and animals. One small “Cub” was the centrepiece. The pack room was decorated to represent the jungle, and after tea the totem pole was presented to the pack, and tho Commissioner for training gave the boys a talk on what the totem meant. Afterwards, Lady Cubmaster Buck affixed the first year’s service star. Next oame the Investiture of Sixers Reeves and Ridley aa “Two Star Cubs” under the eyes of the Totem, and Sixer Reeves was made Senior Sixer. Sixer Cull, 2nd M. Ryder, 2nd D. Hill and Cubs J. Fisher, R. Hill, M. Armstrong, T. Patton, T. Botcher and T. Carlyle were presented with their First Star, and [first-year Service Stars were presented to W. Reeves, J. Ridley, A. Cull, M. Ryder, J. Fisher, D. Hill, R Hill, J. Nelly and J- Buckley. The Commissioner (Mr N. D. Stubbs), congratulated the pack and wished them “Good Hunting ” and stated that he hoped to present the Second Stars to these little chaps again next year. Associated with Lady Cuibmaster Buck were Lady Assis-tant-Cubmaster s J. and G. Ridley. —Good Hunting.
