Happy Community Sing

GARRISON BAND STAGES BRIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

There was a fair attendance at the Opera Houso last evening for the community sing arranged by the Garrison Band. Under tho happy leadership of Mr. Owen Pritchard, the audience entered into tho hilarious spirit of tho evening with ready co-operation and joyous singing. Many old favourites were rendered and Mr. Pritchard, aided and abetted by Mr. Frank Crowther af the piano, led the crowd on to splendid concerted efforts. Many original variations and novelty numbers were introduced and each added to tho merriment of the evening. Miss Daisy Lister, a talented young performer, charmed the audience with her singing of “Rocky Mountain Lullaby,” and in response to an enthusiastic encore she gave “When Your Hair is Turned to Silver.” Miss Amy Woodward (Wellington) gave three soprano numbers, “Love the Pcdler,” “My Hero” and “0 Ship of My Delight,” and her renderings also met with an appreciative reception. Another popular artist was Mr. H. F. Wood, now of Wellington, and formerly well-known in Palmerston North concert circles. His numbers were “Tho Good Bye Song,” from “Tho White Horse Inn,” and “Great Red Dawn.” By special request ho also sang “Finiculi, Finicula,” “Charmainc” and “I Love You In Velvet.” He was given an enthusiastic recoption at each appearance. Particularly delightful wero the duets by Miss Woodward and Mr. Wood who gave “A Paradise For Two” and “They Didn’t Believe Me.” Much amusement was created by the handing up from a lady member of the audience of a box which was found to contain two dolls for Messrs Crowther and Pritchard. The reading of the accompanying letter quite convulsed the audience.

At a suitable juncture Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., president of the band, thanked tho audience for their attendance and intimated that the band was urgently in need of funds and tho only way of raising money was by means of such entertainments. This was the sole means of enabling tho band to carry on. Mr. Nash then moved a hearty vote of thanks to tho performers who had so kindly come up from. Wellington, and to the song leaders, Messrs Crowther and Pritchard. Miss Lister was also thanked by Mr. Nash for her contribution to the programme.
