Shannon

From Our Own Correspondent. On Tuesday evening a farewell social was tended the Rev. G. Young, vicar of tho Foxton-Sliannon parishes, by . the peoplo of Shannon. The function, which was representative of the various activities outsido of tho vicar’s immediate sphere as well as that of his church, was a most enjoyable one. Tho evening was spent in dancing, games, and singing. Songs were contributed by Mr J. D. Campbell, while a very amusing playetto entitled “Tho Perfect Pair,” was produced by Mr P. Colo and Miss S. Taylor. There wero various games in which old and young heartily joined. The music for the dances was supplied by Mrs Bovis and Mrs Easton,, while Mr P. Cole aetbd as M.C: On behalf of the parishioners and' especially those of the Shannon portion, Mr Hallam presented Mr Young with a very handsome travelling rug. He expressed regret at tho departure from their midst' of ■ their .vicar, but trusted that in his new circle of work in England he would find happiness and many of’tho good things of life, and in this ho wished him God’s speed. Mrs C. Easton, president of tho Shannon Plunket Society, of which Mr Young was a member on the Advisory Board, voiced the regret of her society in losing such a valuable member as the vicar, but also wished him joy and happiness in the new work to which he was going. On behalf of the Plunkct Society she asked Mr Young to accept a book, suitably inscribed, as a token of the regard with which he wa-s held by the members.

On rising to reply, Mr Young was greeted with hearty rounds of applause. ‘Ho said that ho could hardly express his thanks for the many kind things said about him, but he did sincerely thank the parishioners and all those prosent for their words of cheer and tho fine gifts made to him that evening. A very pleasant function was brought to a close by tho singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem. - - .

On Tuesday afternoon tho fortnightly cuchro party was held by the Croquet Club. There was a good attendance and many interesting games resulted, the winner being Mrs McLaggan and Mrs Hording second. Tho hostesses were Mesdamcs Bovis and Edgingtou.

An unfortunate accident befel Miss Marjorie Eagle while she was cycling

through tho town. The handlebars of hear machine collapsed and she was thrown heavily to the ground, sustaining a broken arm and ' bruises. She was attended immediately by the District Nurse and was aftenvards ordered to the hospital for treatment.
