.From Our Own Correspondent. Rabbits On The Increase. i The soriousness of - neglect iu regard to the continued destruction of rabbits, together' with an interesting explanation of the principal method of control of : tho pest, wero matters which emanated from the monthly meeting- of the Babbit Board. 1 In commenting upon the condition of the district at the present time, the chairman (Mr. B. G. Gower) said he had been surprised lately- to see signs of rabbits on land that had previously been clear for some timej and this had led him to believe that there had been an increase in the pest in the-board's district recently. Mr. T. A. Grammer, (Bainesse): “I am sure of it. The rabbits are gaining a hold in the rough country.” In support of this, Mr. Grammcr staled that 200 rabbits were taken off an area oi land in liis district quite recently, while he understood' that the "board’s employees had 1000 slabs ready for the market.

The inspector (Mr. D. It. Barron) said that good work in checking the increase had been done under the Unemployment Board’s No. 11 scheme-, which had provided a subsidy to two men engaged in rabbit destruction work. This system was an ideal one in that tho men carried out the poisoning work and it was done properly at very little cost to the farmer as the expense was divided up amongst a group of property owners. The work of tho men had been a real “cyc-openor” to farmers and those who had considered their properties fr\e from the pest had been amazed at the results obtained by these men. On one farm 80 acres had produced 34 rabbits, while 135 had ben taken from another area over which he and a sportsman with dog and gun had traversed and tailed to put up a single hare or rabbit. Golf. An inter-club match was played on the local links on Wednesday afternoon between teams representing the Shannon and Herrington Golf Clubs. The following are the individual results, Shannon players being mentioned lirst: H. Blythe lost to E. T. Wilson, C. Stern beat J. B. Maephersou, H. Stern lost to L. C. Bryant-, J. Mabey beat T. V. Crotty, Mead and Pope beat S. Mattar and L. Thompson, McLean and Taylor lost to G. Woods and C. W. Pedersen, Cc?iins and J. Eawlinson beat L. Mattar and E. Pedersen, Mason and Gray lost to M. Baird and B. Pedersen. In the individual games; Foxton won 7 and lost 5, while Shannon won 5 and lost 7. In the four-ball competition Shannon won 3 and halved one, while Foxton won 2 and halved one. Eugby. Saturday afternoon two interesting matches were played The first match which created considerable enthusiasm among tho spectators was a junior fixture in which the two local teams, I oxton and Foxton Fire Brigade, were engaged. The encounter proved to be a thrilling one in which Fire Brigade although defeated by tho narrow margin of one point, were responsible for the better exhibition of the game, their fast and nippy back division giving an excellent display throughout the keen and evenly contested game. The Foxton team, although lacking the penetrative dash, of their opponents, maintained a very sound defence and also kept up a tireless attack with the result that the outcome of the struggle was in doubt right up till tho final whistle, when the scores read Foxton 11, Foxton Fire Brigade 10. Mr. Mackay ably controlled the game. The* senior match subsequently played was between Shannon and Foxton Fire Brigade and although strenuously contested, this game lacked the exciting movements which were a feature of the junior game. Shannon fielded a heavier pack than the local team and this combined with fitness proved too much for the local players who were defeated by 17 points to 9. Mr. W. Neville was referee. Successful Danes. A dance-, organised by the newlyformed Foxton District High School Old Pupils' Association, which was held on Wednesday evening proved to be an outstanding success both socially and financially. Mr. M. Moffat (Oroua Downs) carried out the duties of M. 0., while the music was supplied by Mr. Los. Mattar, extras being contributed by Mr.-S. Spring. Accompaniments on stringed instruments, which were contributed by the Hirini brothers and •Mr. W. Hussey ; were much appreciated. During the evening novelty dances were held and were won as follows: Monte Carlo fox-trot, Mr.-J. Barrat and Miss E. Moore; spot waltz, Mr. L. Moffat and Miss J. Thynne; Mont© Carlo foxtrot, -Mr. W. Melton and Miss B. Wilson. Supper- was dispensed by members of tho committee, after which dancing was continued until a late hour.
