Shannou
From Our Own Correspondent. Football. Tlio only football match played at Shannon on Saturday was between Shannon and Pirates juniors. The game was much more interesting than the scores indicate and some very fine football was played at times. There was, however, a lack of finish that one would like to see among young players. In the first half Shannon had all the advantage and by half time had piled up 23 points, tries being scored by Parcell, McEwen (2) and Morley, while Buchanan potted a brilliant field goal. Pirates’ score at half time was nil. In the second half Pirates showed determination to score and a very fine effort was made by Ken Elliott who crossed the Shannon line and opened his team’s account. A little later Walton scored and Malaney converted. Graining heart, Pirates were now keeping Shannon busy and 1 another try raised the visitors’ score to 11. Shannon did not score again although several attempts looked dangerous, the game ending Shannon 23, Pirates 11, the points being scored for each respectively, in each half. During the game Noel Hotter was unfortunate in having his nose broken in ono of the exciting scrambles and had to be attended medically. The match was very ably refereed by Mr. H. Thorpe. During the progress of tho sonior match at Foxton T. Jude, one of Shannon’s best forwards, met with a painful accident in having his kneo dislocated. This will no doubt prevent him from playing for somo time and it is particularly unfortunate as Tom was looked upon as a certainty for the representative team. Golf. Owing to light rain falling in the morning golfing conditions wore somewhat sticky in the afternoon for the bogey match. However, there was a good muster of players but nothing sensational was returned. The best card was that of J. Mabcy’s with two up on tho Colonel. On Wednesday a team will visit Foxton. The following have been selected to ropresont (shannon: Blytb, C. Stern, H. Stern, McLean, Mead, Moynihan, Taylor, Mabey, Rawlinson, Mason. For the week ending July 1 the Unemployment Board made an allocation for Shannon of £ll3 10s. In view of tlio fact that 14 additional men would be on relief that week the local committee protested through tho certifying officer, Mr. Semple, with the result that tlio board has increased tho allocation by £l2 2s. There are at present 10S men registered in Shannon and orders havo been placed for 35 pairs of boots for distribution. Plimket Society. The following subscriptions of 5s each are acknowledged with thanks: Mcsdames Semplo, Mark, Aim and Mr. Aim. Tho society intends holding a flag 500 evening on Juno 30 for the purpose of augmenting its funds. Community Sing. Tho community sing arranged for last Thursday of behalf of tho swimming bath funds was, unfortunately, was poorly attended and had to be postponed. However, the orchestra, members of tlio committee and friends went to tho homo of Mr. Hyde where an enjoyable evening was spent. Mr. Knyvctt entertained tho company with an interesting ancedoto about washerwomen. Mr. Hyde then obliged with a song about ‘‘Miss Dot and Carry One.” Mr. Thwaites related stories about “ Washcrladies and Basins,” ‘‘Collins” and ‘‘Wiskets.” There wore several other interesting stories of a similar type. Tlio orchestra then delighted those present with a selection of items. Messrs Ivan Hemmingscu and Cave, junr., played a duet on Hawaiian guitars. Mr. Knyvett ably assisted at tho piano and also sang several charming songs. Mir. Olaf Hcmmingsou sang - ‘‘Tho Mountains of Mourne. ” Mr. Thwaites was heard in a new version of ‘‘Sing mo to Sleep.” Mr. Bass gave a silent recitation, ‘‘Tho Boy with tho Eggs.” The Hemmingscu trio and Mr. Knyvctt presented several vocal and instrumental items and Master Stuart Hyde very ably recited ‘‘Tho Law of the Overland.” A very cnjoyablo evening was brought to a close with a community sing. Personals. Mr. J. W. Murray, who was _ for many years a resident of Shannon, ana now of Takaka, Nelson, was a visitor to tho town and district during tho week-end. Mr. Murray has been spending part of his holidays renewing old acquaintances and noting tho many changes that have taken place since nc left here some years ago. Mr. Sid. Richardson, who recently underwent an operation in tho Palmerston North Hospital, is making satisfactory progress. Mr. Frank Mardon, who has been a patient at the Palmerston North Hospital, has been transferred to Wellington for special treatment. The friends of Mr. George Woodmass will regret to learn that he had to be taken by ambulance to tho Palmerston North Hospital. Mr. Woodmass has not been well for some time and ho became suddenly worse, so the district nurso decided to accompany him to me hospital immediately. Euchre, The Labour party’s euchre tournament was again wc-Il attended, there being 44 players. A very interesting evening’s entertainment was the result, the winners being T. King for the men, and Miss E. Woodmass second.
