Heavy Fine Inflicted For lllegal Betting

CASE BEFORE LOCAL MAGISTRATE

A charge of illegal betting was heard in. the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Alfred Dewar pleaded guilty before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., to a charge that on March 2nd he did frequent Main street for the purpose of betting. The charge was laid under section 2 of the Gaming Act, 1910. Senior-Detective Quirke stated that the only previous conviction against accused was in 1930, when he was fined £SO for keeping a common gaining house. Ho was apparently doing as well in the bookmaking business as others, and could afford a penalty. The Magistrate: "Is there any reason why he should not be treated the same as others who were before this court recently V’ Mr. Quirke: "No; lie is in a good way. If these men can afford to lay £IOO doubles they can afford to pay a fine.”

Accused had nothing to say and was penalised to the extent of £IOO for the offence.
