Chinese reports state that China is making desperato efforts to recapture Chengtehfu. Thero was serious fighting throughout the night of Alarch 8, and the Chinese claim that they drove back the Japanese for a considerable distance, losing 200 men in tho process. Attacks are being mado by night in order to nullify the Japanese aeroplanes. Tho Chinese are sending considerable reinforcements to the vicinity of Ivupeikow pass and aro preparing to hold the position until the launching of an offensive under Chiang Kaishek.

The Japanese Legation at Peiping i's attempting to negotiate for the withdrawal of tho Chinese forces in order to prevent further bloodshed and the extension of hostilities in North China; otherwise the Japanese will be compelled to send troops through Shanhaikuan and attack tho Chinese in the rear. The Japanese announce that tlioir operations will cease when tho occupation of Kupeikow is completed.
