ENGLAND’S RICHEST HANDICAPS.

In England last year 27 handicaps carried £IOOO or more to the winner, the most valuable being the Kempton Park Great. Jubilee, which gave the, owner of the winner, Venturer, £3050.. Winners of two important handicaps during the season were Nitsichin| (Cesarewitch and London Cup), Roi dc Paris (Great Metropolitan and Newbury! Autumn Cup), Abbots Worthy (New-J bury Spring Cup and Sundown Annivcr-’ sary Cup), Cat o’ Nine Tails (Ebor Handicap and Great Yorkshire Handicap), and China King (Duko of York Handicap and dead-heat with Denbigh Liverpool Autumn Cup). MANAWATU TROTTING CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR WEDNESDAY NEXT. The following acceptances havo been received for the Manawntu Trotting Club’s meeting to be held at Ashhurst on the loth. inst.:

RACE TRANSPORT Racing and trotting clubs are going through a very difficult period at present, and the majority of them—those which havo not been able to build up reserves to tide them over a time of stress —are just hanging on in the hope that there will soon be a change for the better. ‘‘lt is a weUknown fact that the majority of clubs have been running at a loss. The Government, however, demands and get? its “pound of flesh,” even though the dubs havo actually lost money through their meetings. The racing game s “golden egg” costs tho Government nothing to collect, hut the powers that be are doing little to encourage the clubs to go on collecting this revenue for them. The latest difficulty appears to be in connection with transport. Yesterday a prominent member of the Manawatu Racing Club telephoned the secretary of tho Manawatu Trotting Club, Mr. A. H. Manson, and asked him if he wa's aware of the fact that the transport authorities had refused licenses to taxi drivers to ply for hire to the trots at Ashhurst next Wednesday and to the gallops at Awapuni. Realising that this restriction will impose a hardship on the racing public, particularlv those who are working until after noon and who will have difficulty in !getting to the station in time to i catch “the Napier mail train, Mr. ManLon sent the following telegram to Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P.: “Understand taxis not allowed ply for hire to trots at Ashhurst on Wednesday. Trains not suitable for Wednesday half-holi-day people closing 12.30. Can you do something to rectify?” AVOIDING THE TAX. English owners of brood mares sent to Ireland are not now leaving them in that country to foal, and this year no 'English mares aro visiting the National fctud in Ireland.

j The London “Sporting Life” says I that owners of Irish stallions are cx'perieneing a lean time, as apart from the slump in prices of Irish bloodstoek and the consequent reluctance of breeders to have their mares covered at even the comparatively low rates ruling in Ireland, practically no marcs arc being from England. Although a mare sent to Ireland to be covered by an Irish Free State stallion will not be liable to the 40 per cent, duty on re-importation >o England, her foal born in the Free State will be subject to the full duty. In the eases of valuable brood marcs covered by high-priced stallions, 40 per cent, duty works out at a verj considerable sum. I In the circumstances which have arisen many owners of sires hitherto imuck. in request arc considering the .question of transferring them from the Irish Free State to quarters in England.

A London writer says that m England last season a prime topic among followers of National Hunt sport was the short leathers adopted by the successful amateur, Mr. J. Fawcus.
