Judges Have Busy Day

Splendid Stock Display

The 29th. annual show of the Feilding Industrial, Agricultural and Pastoral Association, opened at Feilding .yesterday when excellent weather conditions were experienced, the hot sun being tempered by a slightly overcast sky. Most of the day was devoted to the judging of the excellent stock and industrial exhibits and preparing for'People 's Day to-day. Yesterday’s attendance was very satisfactory. The stock judges comment favourably on the quality of the animals penned, showing that fanners, despite the depressed markets, continue to pay attention to breeding. Competition -was keen and close. In the industrial sections, entries wero exceedingly numerous and outstanding work was staged. To-day’s events include the judging of the horse section, competitions and grand parade.

WITH THE JUDGES Friesian:. After disposing of three of the champion animals there was little in the way of merit above ordinary show cattle, stated Mr. J. M. McLinden, judge of the Fricsians. The entry was not a big one, but the champion bull, champion cow and reserve cow were three very line beasts. The champion bull was ouo which, if spared, would win many prizes in shows of next year. The champion cow and reserve cow were also extremely good specimens, but the latter was rather small in the udder. , Large Whites and Blacks ' Mr. J. M. McLinden judged the Largo White and Large Black pigs and said there, was some fine specimens shown. Two leading animals in the White section were the champion boar and the first prize winner in the junior boar class, the latter being a most promising beast and brought out with great credit to the breeder. In the sows, the champion showed very fine conformation and very pleasing lines, and was brought out in perfect show condition. This fact drew her away from the competition, which was very ’ strong but lacked finish. The Large Black champion boar was a promising specimen showing beautiful quality, pleasing symmetry and plenty of character. A good runnerup was the reserve champion. In the sows the champion was very evenly balanced, with plenty of finish and quality, and was likewise given a hard run. by the reserve, which would have beaten her but for a little weakness over the gammon. Fat Cattle Mr. J. M. James, of Mastertou, who judged the fat cattle, was enthusiastic in his praise of the various classes. The entries were all of good quality and a very even lot. The champion bullock, a Hereford, was a splendid beast with a fine top line and typical of the breed. There was nothing outstanding in the other classes, and it was particularly pleasing to see such keen competition and evenness and with all breeds so well represented. Dairy Cattle Mr. B. Charmley (Kirit-aki) was very pleased with the dairy cattle shown. They were a nice lot and the champion cow was a very fine beast indeed. The quality showed an improvement, especially in the yearlings and calves. Mr. Charmley also selected the best 3-year-old dairy heifer out of all comers, whether puTebred or grade. The entries competed for the C. G. C. Dormer 25-guinea cup, and the winner proved to be Mrs. W. G. Shannon’s Fox’s Honey. This heifer was a beautiful dairy beast showing more length than its competitors. The second prize winner of Mr. P. A. Anderson was'a very neat animal also. Bed Polls Mr. D. F. McLeod (Taumarunui) had little to say about the Bed Polls, which were not very numerous. The exhibits were quite good, the outstanding animals being the champions.
