Government's Plans on Sales Tax
NO ANNOUNCEMENT YET Times Special "WELLINGTON, Last Night. As has been indicated previously, the imposition of a sales tax will probably form ono of tho main items in the Government’s programme designed to placo tho finances of tho country in a sounder position, but tho leaders of tho Government are refraining from making any announcement in tho meantime.
The Prime Minister (the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes), when ashed to-day whether Cabinet had reached any decision in favour of a sales tax, said: “I cannot tell you.” The Prime Minister suggested that the question was hardly a fair one at the moment, and added that Cabinet was making satisfactory progress with its legislative programme. The Minister of Finance (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates) was also reticent. When ashed when the taxation Bills would be introduced, Mr. Coates satisfield himself with the remark: "They are coming along quite well.” Opposition to Sales Tax “UNDUE BURDEN ON BUSINESS PEOPLE AND CONSUMERS.” Per Press Association WAIPUKURAU, Jan. 31. After endorsing unanimously the executive’s earlier protest against the higher exchange, a largely attended general meeting of the Chamber of Commerce recorded that strong opposition was likely to the imposition of a sales tax, which was regarded as an undue burden on business.
