Creator of “Forsyte Saga” Dead

JOHN GALSWORTHY PASSES. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright Received Monday, 2 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 31. Obituary : John Galsworthy, the famous novelist and playwright. NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE John Galsworthy, who was awarded the Nobel Prizo for literature a few months ago, was born iu 18G7 at Coombe in Surrey, of Devonshire stock. Educated at Harrow and Oxford, he was called to the Bar, but practised little, and travelled widely, including New Zealand. A humanitarian and social reformer, ho was too true an artist to allow the propagandist to get the better of the dramatist. He was an accomplished studeut ot form and stagecraft, masterly in dialogue, penetrating in psychology. His method in the novel leant toward the presentation of a series of analyses rather than a continuous fow of narrative. His “Forsyte Saga" is known tho world over. Galsworthy’s plays include “The Silver Box,’’ “Strife,’’ “The Skin Game,’’ “Justice" (recently brilliantly revived in London), “Tho Pigeon," and “Loyalties," which was given such a creditable production in Palmerston North last year by the Repertory Society. Galsworthy refused a Knighthood in 1918. His serious illness was cabled only a few days ago.
