Fallen Fiscal Idols
MU. BRUCE ENTHUSES OVER OTTAWA Received Sunday, 9.50 p.m. LONDON, Jan. L 3. “I have not yet overcome my r. 'Action for tho British Empire, and A much prefer that description to thfif British Commonwealth,” said Mr. Stanley Bruce in proposing the British Commonwealth in accordance with the toast list at a Birmingham banquet given by tho Jewellers’ and Silversmiths’ Association. He added that every Britisher overseas had been thrilled with pride at the courage and integrity shown by the British people during the past two years when British finances had been the most important factor in the affairs of the Empire and the world. Ottawa meant a complete revolution for mombers of the Empire. The policy which Australia and Canada had adopted was a policy of sanity. “You were wedded to free trade as though it were a god, but we were wedded to protection as though it were a super-god. The arrangements made at Ottawa are going to mean reciprocal arrangements such as wo never dreamt of in the past.”
