The French Government was defeated by 390 to 193 on the Budget proposals and has decided to resign. In face of the Senate’s ultimatum that it would refuse to consider the Budget on Saturday unless passed by 4 o’clock in the afternoon the Chamber of Deputies sat continuously and approved of 149 articles by 2 o’clock when the adjournment was taken till 3.30. Then confidence in the Government’s fiscal taxation was carried by 337 to 271. Defeat came at 6 o’clock when the Socialists gingered up by the civil servants’ clamour against the cuts solidly opposed the 5 per cent, cut -and the increase in the income tax despite M. Boncour’s impassioned appeal and the Government resigned an hour later.
