From Our Owu Correspondent. Ow T ing to Mr. B. Handly, of tho local branch of tho Loan ana Mercantile Agency C., being an inmate of tho Pahiatua Public Hospital, Mr. Lambert Boacb, of Mastertou, is filling bis position for a month on temporary transfer. At the final meeting of the Carnival Shopping Week Committee, it was reported that tho accounts had been audited and showed that there wa3 a profit of £29 6s on the “Couriery” a profit of £5 16s 6d on the “Bob Hop” •and £5 8s 9d on the community sing—a total of over £ls on the wholo week. By unanimous decision it was decided to hand this amount to the organiser, to whom the success of the week was mainly due. Tho following pupils of Pahiatua District High School, Marjory B. Taylor and Bita A. Williams, were successful in passing .the University Entrance Examination. An ex-pupil, Gower E. Wingfield, passed in Dunedin, 0.0. P. Dental Preliminary Science, and Beville B. Austin in Napier in M. Latin. Bernadino McSherry, whose homo is in Pahiatua, passed the University Entrance examination in Wellington. A meeting of tho Pahiatua Boxing Club was held on Saturday evening, with Mr. A. P. Jensen in the chair. It was decided to hold a boxing tournament on Show night, the main attraction being a bout between Harold Beeves, light heavyweight amateur champion of New Zealand, and W. Bilish, of Wellington. Tho annual Friendly Socities’ picnic was held at Carnival Park on Monday when a lengthy programme of sports events for the children was successfully carried through under the direction of Mr. L. W. Kitchen, the secretary. To add attraction for the older people four adult, contests were also arranged. After many days of perfect weather a southerly storm accompanied by lightning and continual thunder broke over Pahiatua suddenly on Sunday afternoon. Slocty rain, fierce squalls of rain, over one and a half inches being said to have fallen during tho afternoon, were followed by a very cold evening and on both Monday and Tuesday mornings thero were slight frosts. The results were as follow: — Boys’ three-lap race: G. King (scr) 1, F. McKenzie (scr) 2, E, Evans (25scc) 3. Won by less than, a wheel. Also started: Irons (15scc), Cochran (25 ,scc), Easton (65sec). Men’s seven-lap race: J. Purcell (75 sec) 3, J. Preston (70sec) 2, J. Satherley (125se,c) 3. Also started: K. Bobinson (125 sec), W. Hussey (scr), L. Thompson (70sec), M. Symes (135scc), E. Coley (140 sec), Bloomfield (145sce), W. Melton (155sce). Tho total championship points to date are as follow: J. Purcell S, J. Preston 6, J. Satherlcy 6, J. Smith 4, L. Thompson 4, M. Symes 2. Shipping With a cargo of coal from Greymouth and Westport, tho M.S. Huanui arrived in poTt on Wednesday morning. Discharging operations were completed late on Wednesday night and the vos'sel crossed the bar outward at 10 o’clock yesterday morning, bound _ tor Greymouth, where a further cargo is to be loaded for discharge at Foxton. Bowling On Wednesday afternoon on tho local green a game for tho Nvo Ferns was played in which the challengers were successful in wresting the trophies from the holders. Mr. Leislunan, who has been in charge of tho combined Shannon and Foxton Presbyterian district for tho past few months, has received notice of his transfer to the Otago district. The vacancy will be filled by the Bov. Alexander Fotheringham, of the Presbyterian Church, Awahuri,who will tako 'up his duties on February 12.
