Foxton
From Our Own Correspondent. Sunday School Prize-Giving. About seventy children were present at the anniversary tea and prize-giving held in connection with the Methodist Wunday school on Tuesday evening. The children did full justice to the ample supply of good things provided t>y the Lauies' Social Guild, after which outdoor games were indulged in. Subsequently the children presented a short programme, comprising the following items which were enjoyed by a good number of parents and friends who were present:—Pianoforte items (2), by Grace Huntley; recitations, by Leita i.vaus, Helen Murray, Winnie Murray, Annie Bullard, Charlie Bullard, and Fred Murray; duet by Joyce Coley and Mclva King; song by Hazel Hinds; violin solo by John Eiches; recitation, by Winnie Murray. The superintendent (Mr. A. G. Huntley) then presented prizes to the following:—Senior girls (equal marks): Joan Young, Hazel Hinds, Grace Huntley and Nancy Chrystall. Second class (equal marks); Helen Murray, Winnie Murray, Betty Young, Margery Podinore; second, Audrey King, Nina Pikaloff, Allan Bead. Third class girls: Dorothy Young, Lyala Pikaloff. Primers: Annie Murray, Doreen Howe, Vera Pikaloff, Evelyn Podmore. Senior boys: Keith Chrystall, Leslie Podmore. Second class boys: Donald Young, Nelson Podmore, John Eiches. Third class boys: Gordon Podmore, Fred Murray, Leslie King (equal marks). All the children attending school received books, over sixty being contributed. Subsequently Mr. Huntley expressed thanks to the Ladies' Guild for providing the tea, to Mrs. Eiches for her work as organist, to Miss C. Walsh for assisting at service with the violin, and to all for their very willing service. Mr. P. J. Mairs eulogised the work being carried out by Mr. Huntley and his remarks were endorsed by Mr. Bullard.
Cycling. Three road cycle races wero held on Wednesday evening under the auspices of the Foxton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. Jn the boys' two lap event, L. Zaird (125scc.) was the successful competitor, while G. King (55 sec.) came second, followed by E. Easton (80sec.) third. Also started: J. Bergin (GOsce.), A. Cochran (15sec.), L. Irons (lOsec.), K. McKenzie (scr.). A ladies' race (1 lap) was held and this was won by Miss Beran, first, and Miss Bills, scond. In the men's six lap race the results wero as follow:—W. Hussey (scr.) I, K. Eobinson (120 sec.) 2, J. Smith (SSscc.) 3. Also started: W. Lee (95sce.), L. Thompson (90sec.), 11. Cooper (85sec.), J. Satherley (Sosec.), >S. Graham (70sec.), Tatana (65scc.), J. Purcell (65sec.), J. Preston (GOsec.), J. D. Purcell (GOsec.), S. Bills (GOscc.). Cards. In a challenge match played at Foxton on Tuesday evening, the Foxton Card Club defeated the Standard Cyclone Club, of Palmerston North, by 57 games to 41. An enjoyable evening was spent.
