In surroundings second to none for beauty, convenience and from the point of view of visibility, the Manawatu Racing Club will open its popular summer meeting at Awapuni on Monday. Considering the dry season, the course is in wonderfully good order, and with fine acceptances and a high standard of horse engaged, patrons will have no complaint to make of the quality of the sport provided. The first race, the Tokomaru High-weight, is timed to start at noon and the Cup, which is the fourth event on the programme, will be run about 2.50 p.m. The stewards have decided to adopt the system of three dividends in fields of nine or more totalisator numbers, and two dividends in fields of between five and eight (inclusive) numbers. The unit of investment will bo ten shillings. Following is a review of the fields:—
High-Weiglit Handicap. The programme -will be entered v.pon with the Tokomaru High-Weight Handicap for which a really good class of horse has been accepted, and in which hiydle and steeplechase jockeys will iigure. Pall Mark has pride of place with 10.13 and after his win in the highweighfc at Masterton, ho must be given a chance. Juggle ran two good races at Peilding while Chock Say, on Woodvillc performances where he recorded a win and followed by a third plaeo tho second day, is well in’ with 10.1. tance quite far enough. Holly . Holm is from the Waikato and is reported to have been working well at Te Eapa. Okopua won both days at Peilding and must be given a show. Tranquility was another that shaped well at the recent Peilding meeting while Capo Pair has run some good races this season. Invietus has shown pace on tho flat and he paid a substantial dividend when ho ran second to Manuiri in the hurdles tho second day at Woodville. CHOCK SAY. JUGGLE, - TRANQUILITY. Maiden Plate. Tiie Maiden Plate, to be decided over six furlongs, has attracted a big field, There is little form to serve as a guide, but Acrelict has performed well and the second to Bee Acre at Levin will not be forgotten. Boaconsiieid ran Senegal to a head at the Feilding spring meeting while Copper King registered a good performance at Woodville when he finished second to Raise Scent after having got away badly. Of the others, Nebulae and. Takalcua have been going along well on the track. Three that may make appeal are— ACRELICT, BEACONSFIELD, COPPER KING. Though a lot will depend on the positions at the post and the luck of the jump out. Tararua Hack. Another good field will parade for the Tararua Hack. The Awapunitrained Minstrel Lad is at the top of the weights and with 9.2 in the saddle will havo to bo considered after y ibs winning effort at Woodville. Saltpot (8.13) is another that will make appeal though the top-weight should holu mm safe. Davistock is a good sort when right also Plateau. The Riecarton candidate, Fleeting Glance, is reported to be very well and will not be without friends. Joyspear has been working well at Awapuni. Holly Holm claims another engagement and may take on the high-weight in preference to this event. Flower is a genuine sort while Revision is reported to uo pr.etty fit. Kalmuk has shown ability to gallop, also Tiger Gain and Bee .Acre which aro recent winners. The public may; elect to accord most support to—
FLEETING GLANCE, PLATEAU, BEE ACRE. Nursery Handicap. There are a number of fashionably bred younsters in the Nursery handicap and a fine race should result. Ralphyllis (8.3) has pride of place while 7.12 is not a big load for Golden Hair which Tan second to Midian in the 2-year-old race at Feilding and is a good sort. This will be Catalogue's first start and Princess Doreen's stable mate will be all the better for the race. Porotiti, trained at Fordcll, is possessed of a nice turn of speed and will have to be taken into consideration on Monday. The Awapuni : trained Colossian may want tho race but Lady Nan has sported silk. Of the others, the Southerner, Silent Flight, mukcs appeal. POROTITI, GOLDEN HAIR. ' RALPHYLLIS. May be at the head of tho betting order.
Gillies Hack Handicap. Two good sorts in Drumfire and Solitaire 11. head tho handicap in the Gillies Hack, Navaho (8.8), a winner at Woodville, being in receipt of lJb. of them. Farmer recorded a first ana third at Feilding and lie i 3 w r ell in with 5.4. Of tho others, Good Hunting seems to have best credentials though Princess Bell, which was left out or tnc list of acceptances, and J.ate .Test will not be neglected on the machine. The favourite may como from— FARMER-, HAY A HO, GOOD HUNTING.
Fitzherbert Handicap. The open sprint has attracted a field of eight with Autopay at the head of the weights. Autopay has been awarded 9.5 but he is a good horse and the weight should not stop him. Paganelli may be reserved for the Grandstand Handicap. If he does start iu this event, however, he will not be without friends for ho has recorded some good gallops recently. Midinette, after her Feilding win, is nicely in with 8.3, also Royal Bengal with 7.10, for he showed convincing form at Feilding and again at Woodville.
Great Charter performed well last season and-ho appears to • have the best credentials of the others. The public may accord most support to— AUTOPAY, MIDINETTE.
Grandstand Handicap. The first day’s programme will be brought to a close with tho Grandstand handicap and a good field should face tho starter. Paganclli, the top-weight, has not been harshly treated with 9:0, while Ruanui is nicely in with 8.4. Atholspear (7.10) has raced well this season, also Pomp, and they will both have friends. Richfield was a good performer last season and would only hnvo to bo right to have a really good chance in this race. Knollmcro is reported to be very well and Arajean has been doing all that has been asked of her oa the Woodville tracks. Saltpot may start in the Tararua handicap. Three that will not bo neglected on the machine arc— POMP, RICHFIELD, ATHOLSPEAR.
